PostPosted: Tue Nov 3, 2009 7:18 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

I'm flying to mumbai early jan 2010 and planning to spend some time chilling out in the south of India before making my way back up north and doing some serious sight seeing and travelling the rest of India. Next stop is Thailand for further chilling out time cos i'll be shattered after all that! Then plan to see Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos. I'd really like a travel buddy even its just for the beginning bit cos I'm on my own and to be honest, am a bit scared!!!

Hi, I was thinking about going to either Goa or Kerala first. If Kerla then work my way back up to Goa. If goa first then prob palolem beach i've heard its gorgeous. Either way some serious chilling out for a good 3 weeks. Then go up towards the mainland and see the main sights. The india triangle. After approx 3 months go to Thailand - havent got that far yet! I'm going on the 28th dec but may need to change my flight to start of jan. So you not even booked yet?

Hi Jwroe..

Just thought i could pitch in by advicing you on your holiday in India..

Mumbai:

well seriously if your going to mumbai spend at the most 3 days out there...orelse the noise is gona get to you..im orignally from mumbai and now in UK and everytime i go home... it does get to me...so keep ti short and sweet...firstly live in south mumbai around Colaba... you can visit the
- gateway of india
- take a walk down the marine drive and gaze at the sun setting on the arabian sea
- good restraunts to eat at south mumbai are, jazz by the bay, tendulkar's (pricey), five spice (try their schezwan wantons and brownie icecream dessert), delhi darbar (authentic indian food)
- if u fancy junk jewellery...the hub of the world is the colaba causeway..trust me ul realise alot of it is actually found at accesorize... all imported from India...but at way cheaper prices at the causeway...
- a new modern site to visit is the Bandra worli sealink
- you wana see the home of bollywood..then head off by local train to goregaon 'film city' or by taxi it wud be about Rs 400 i.e 5£
- you can take a boat from the gateway of india to the elephanta caves, tikts can be booked the same day right at the jetty..
- and finally you gottu visit fashion street... good cheap clothing if u like the indian-modern wear...beware they will rip u off so... bargain to half the price or else just say u dont want it and they will inevitably sell it to you.

after about 3-4 days in Mumbai spend alot of time away from bustling cities...thats where the beauty lies...head off to Goa closer from Mumbai

Goa

either take a traing which is the cheapest unlike the UK ;)
you can take a night 3 tier AC sleeper which is about Rs 800 i.e 10£ or a 2 tier AC sleeper which is about Rs 1500 i.e 20£ ...the train is konkan kanya and its a night journey so its cheap and cheerful
if you wana spend a bit and want a quick journey then book a flight i.e 45mins mumbai to Goa but remember you will have to travel all the way to the airport...for the train the start station is 15 mins away from Colaba...
good budget airlines are, Jetlite, GoAir, Deccan, Spicejet, Indigo ...fares wil range from £50-90

you wana enjoy Goa....live in a beach shack or a cheap B&B around north Goa.. although Palolem beach is south goa...but ye apart form that beach not many other good ones out there... you can always set base in the north and travel for a weekend to the south...if you gona be based in north..get hold of a cheap B&B iv got one for you... and its awesome..its in Candolim and just 5 min walk form the beach...its about Rs.500 for 24 hrs including breakfast or even lesser...but if u you gona stay for a while bargain and really squeeze him... the place is called YORKSHIREMAN and the contact is: Mr Rodrigues: vitus_r@yahoo.com..

the beaches you shud chill out at are arambol...rite up north goa and the beaches aorund that side...il give u more details once you confirm where you gona set base...

thats fabulous. Thanks so much for all that advice. I defo want to see mumbai but will be flying from mumbai to bangkok in about march time so was gonna do that then instead of when i first fly in. I really wanted to go straight to goa actually just to really chill out. I have a very hard job and need to relax. I was thiking about south goa because i believe its more chilled out and less ruined by tourists. But i like the idea you've given me about setting base in north goa in Candolim. I will check out that b+b. At the moment i'm supposed to be flying out on the 28th dec so should be in goa on new years eve but may have to change my flight to beginning of jan. You've been very helpful thanks

my pleasure....ok was too tired typing so il continue my itenary suggestions....ok so dont spend more than 3 weeks at goa..ul get bored in a while ..coz its a real chill out and then becomes monotonous...and if u setting base in north goa... wen u take the train you need to get off at THIVIM a station before MADGAO(south goa) that would take u into goa at about 10-10.30 AM so that done with goa...

thereafter head off to kerala...the most beautiful palce in the world...the kerala backwaters!

take a train once again from goa to cochin(kerala) and once again set base at a location and then move around...
- you can book a house boat cruise for 2-3 days... the price includes food ..air condiitoning and the superb experience of chilling in a wooden house boat..check this site.. http://www.thehouseboatskerala.com
- another lovely experience out there is an ayuverdic massage
- once done exploring kerala you can then move slighlty northwards to banaglore
- another city so noise... and fewer sweet spots...
- from banaglore if u liek wild life ... thers this amaing place to live in the wild and then go on a safari...http://www.junglehut.in/about_junglehut.html
- from the wild experience you can then go into a beautiful hill stations called COONOOR..http://www.coonoor.com/about.htm
- thereafter you can travel to mysore... beautiful town with palaces and dont miss the Brindavan gardens...includes a musical dancing fountain show
....you can spend alot of itme down south and pass your 3 months so make sure you stick to a tight schedule to explore the maximum.

after having spent about 10-15 days down south get out of it .... and now make your way northwards...

Out of South India get to north west india...to the state of Rajasthan..

you will notice a complete different india here... its more of a desert land... you can experience camel exploration ride... the beautiful places are jaiselmar, udaipur and jaipur.. http://www.rajasthantourism.gov.in/

if you missing home and wana experience the cold but beautiful regions then head up north ...to shimla..kulu and manali...

you let me know wat you interested in and il prepare a more detailed itenary for you... seriously iv lived in India the first 21 yrs of my life and i have hardly seen 20% of it and not even visited the Taj Mahal..so its massive and takes time...
so let me know your actual plans and Il assist you... avoid going clubbin in mumbai... you will ge the poshest and the most amzing ones there...but its just as expensive as london clubs if not more..!

Scott,
depends how much u wana spend... flight is almost 3-4 times more where train travel by AC coaches are quite good and u can spend a nite travelling so avoids having to waste time travelling to airports and paying more!

indias rail network is largest in Asia and almost any town/city can be got to by train..although avoid the real cheap tikts ..my advice wud be AC 3 tier or 2 tier coaches..you can get onto the indianrailways site and prebook...just check if u get an Eticket im not very sure since Iv been out of India since 2 yrs

ye u need to plan well coz u can easily get overwhelmed with goa or kerala and waste time .... so stick to an itenary to explore more... rajasthan is amazing and so is the north but ye rmemebr north is cold to bits and south is hot so its a transition from north to south..anymore advice ..let me me know..i can advice you on fabulous eateries in Mumbai and Goa ..coz these r always on my trip wen i go home

As with booze and smokes...

if you are smokers... Wills Classic Mild (http://www.cigarettespedia.com/images/0/01/Classic_indian_version_wills_milds_ks_20_h_india.jpg)is superb or a bit stronger is Goldflake. (http://www.cigarettespedia.com/images/e/ec/Gold_flake_indian_version_gold_lights_ks_20_h_india.jpg).. you get benson and Malboro too at a slightly hihger price...but defo try Wills Classic

drinking!
If you watch F1(force India) or shop at ASDA or tesco you maybe familiar with the Kingfisher Beer... its the best and awesome beer in India, in addition to the usual indternational brands

If you love whisky, try Antiquity, Signature or Royal Stag
You heading to Goa dont forget to try Fenny .. a drink made only in Goa from cashews and brutally strong best to be had with lemonade
If you love dark rum...the king of dark rum in India is Old Monk
Vodka drinkers... try Romanov... half the price of Smirnoff and exactly the same...

The booze market in India is dominated by the Kingfisher beer owner who owns Whyte and Mackay too

So thats the essential tips of a good holiday
