Nouseforname-how are things going up in mildura?! Have you had much luck up there in regards of work? Am looking for fruit picking myself but not having much luck at the moment.

Sorry for the late reply! Yea things are ok here. Work hasn't been to consistent but I have been working on a vineyard doing everything from planting, weeding to pulling covers off the vines for the last month. At the moment I'm staying at Mildura City Backpackers which is not a bad place but I haven't staid or talked to anybody who has staid at any of the other hostels in the area. I would like to try some of the others (Oasis, Mildura International, etc) out though. Starting in Jan. there will be heaps of grape picking work here. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I'm off to Mildura tomorrow to Mildura City Backpackers. Not expecting alot of work, all the places I've contacted said things are a bit slow job-wise, but a friend was at Oasis Backpackers last year and said December was a good time for garlic work. So here's hoping that comes around before the grapes in January.

I'm going to be staying at a working hostel called cellblock, last time I was there it was the best hostel to stay at in order to get work. It's a shithole and the owner is a wanker, but aren't they all?! On the plus side, it has a swimming pool I'll be there next weekend so I'll let you know what the job situation is like.

Bundaberg apparently is a bit of a bitch to stay in, where ever you go. It's probably the main place for backpackers to go for work, and as a result, the owners of the hostels hike prices up, demand at least a weeks rent and generally are not the nicest of places. But, they have the work.

I workeda few hours north in a town called Ayr (about an hour south of Townsville, and hour north of Airlie beach), and that hostel was apparently voted the 2nd worst in Australia!A true delight. It was called the Ayr Hotel - don't stay there!

I think there's 3 or 4 in Ayr, and there's a couple in Home HIll, about 15 mins down the highway. Just not the Ayr Hotel! (Well you can if you want - the people who stay there are always sound, it's just a dump!).

Bowen Backpackers.

In Bowen, surprisingly.

Not amazing, but lots of veggie work.

I was working on a tomato farm, started off doing 10 hour days planting tomatoes (at one point we didn't get a day off for 2 weeks), it was a piece of piss sitting on the back of a tractor all day. But when we finished that, we had to manually re-plant and also strip down all the dead plants - that was back breaking but we only had to do it for 6 hours a day.

I workeda few hours north in a town called Ayr (about an hour south of Townsville, and hour north of Airlie beach), and that hostel was apparently voted the 2nd worst in Australia!A true delight. It was called the Ayr Hotel - don't stay there!

Ha ha my friends stayed there, I saw the pics, looke horrendous! We stopped there on the way up the coast for about an hour, freaky. Did you see the newsagent shop that had creepy, decaying mannequins positioned to look like regular shoppers? Ewwwww!
