most people sign upto agencies and get office based work, others go for bar/waitressing work and fruit/farm work!!
I wouldnt try looking in Sydney for too long if thats your plan, its very hard i think to get a jobi n sydney as everyone tries there, and if no job, it is very expensive - even with a job i dont think you save much. Try brisbane/melbourne/perth!

people on here have said there is plenty of short term temp work (which is what I am looking for) in Melbourne and Perth. I did read that someone has found work in Sydney but it is an expensive city to live in. I'm not sure about the rest of the east coast though

I wouldnt hang too much on Melbourne one of my freinds emigrated and it took her a while to find any work in admin but it does look like its picked up a fair bit recently(this was over a year ago she went). Although saying that I think she may have enjoyed being a lady of leisure a bit too much lol

In Sydney most people end up doing door to door sales but i wouldnt recommend it. Its long hours with no garuntee of making money, the companies all rip you off aswell

Hey, i'm in Brisbane just now and am working in a call centre. The money's pretty good. When you come over try and budget so that even if it takes you a few weeks to get a job you won't be stuck. Oh and pleeeeeeease don't do door to door sales, it's without a doubt the worst job I've ever done!! xx

I did my three months fruit picking in Tassie, QLD and North Vic. Loved it.
Did some waitresing/bar work in Melbourne, in Crown Casino.
Now working in Darwin at the airport, admin stuff for a freight company. $25 an hour. Get in!

There's lots of stuff around, and I'm sure yoú'll have no trouble finding work when you get ehre so don't stress. The economic/job crisis thing didn't seem to hit Australia as bad as the UK. And the pay I find is generally a bit better than home too. ($22 an hour sorting cherries... $14 (no tax) packing zuccinis, $18 an hour waitressing....)

$22 an hour to sort cherries? I want some of that!

Yeah the aussies still claim they avoided the recession

I did my usual legal secretary work in sydney $28 per hour and then working on a tomato farm £17 per hour. I remember meeting a girl in sydney who was earning $29 an hour just to work on reception, wtf??? Fucked me right off that did!

Wages are always pretty good over here, on the whole.

I'm not earning as much as I usually do over here, but I've got a great job and the money's still pretty decent.

Australia avoided the recession, it's official. It came close, but the Oz economy didn't shrink - in its weakest quarter it still grew slightly. The economic news in general out here is overwhelmingly positive now, so it's chin up time.

I've been back in Sydney for a good few months now, and I've seen shit loads of construction work in and around the CBD throughout that time. Things didn't grind to a halt on that front. Not like the UK where building sites were deserted for months on end (and may still be - I wouldn't know).

Me and my boyfriend have both recently been through the experience of job hunting in Sydney, I've just started my second job now (as I didn't enjoy my first) working full time at a high fashion store and my boyfriend has done a number of different jobs since we started living here 2 months ago before landing his new one so I know a lot about the job scene at the moment.

Firstly I would definitely not recommend looking for office work. Both myself and my boyfriend have office experience having come from legal and accounting backgrounds...however because we were on a one year working visa we found that firms didn't want us as we could only work six months, yet we were too qualified for office junior jobs which generally go to school leavers.

In November retail work is definitely the way forward. Having had previous retail experience I have been turning down many offers in Sydney for permanent positions at stores. However my boyfriend didn't have any retail experience yet has been offered jobs as an Xmas casual. Out here casuals are paid more than permanent staff members as they don't receive benefits such as sick pay, and whilst you don't have contracted hours most people are expecting to work full time hours until Jan.

I personally think that Sydney is one of the easier places to get work, particularly in retail. When we were in Melourne hardly any one was advertising fo staff. Honestly get your ass to sydney and start applying for xmas casual jobs!! (ps david jones need casuals desperately!)

This has always been the case in Sydney, mate. It's not really different at the moment. 'Office work' is too much of a generic term to have any real meaning. I work in an office, but it's in marketing. If you've got experience and the right personality, you can still get good 'office work' in Sydney and elsewhere in Oz. Depends what type of office work, though.
