 Working in Sydney... Hostel advice?

PostPosted: Wed Oct 28, 2009 5:08 am Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hey guys,

Straight to the point. I land in Sydney in 2 days time and will be on the job hunt. Can anyone recommend any cheap hostels i.e. 'worker hostels' which offer cheaper long term rates and are a bit quieter as most people there are working.

Thanks in advance for the swift replies.

Hey,
AVOID working in door to door sales especially with Integral Marketing in Bondi Junction, it is a complete rip off and you will not get all the wages which you have earned,

My friend did this. Spent about 10 hours day knocking on doors in over 40 degrees of heat 6 or 7 days a week and earned a massive lump sum of $400 after about 6 weeks! If you hit your target, you get 400 basic a week and if you make any sales on top of that, you talking good money. But if you don't hit your target, you get naff all.

Also, I know a few hostels in kings cross offered free accommodation in exchange for a couple of hours a day cleaning. You could combine that with another job and save a fortune!

You might want to try some of the suggestions in Kings Cross. It's probably the best place to get good long-term rates.

Working and living in a hostel can get a bit tiresome after a while, so it's always worth looking into a short-term share room on hostel notice boards or Gumtree if you manage to nail down some regular work. Gumtree Sydney has a 'short-term lets' message board.

A good hostel for workers is Billabong Gardens. I've not been there for a good few years, but it's probably my favourite hostel in Sydney. They still do long-term rates too. Really nice, and it's in Newtown which is a bloody awesome suburb with plenty of students around (I'll be there this afternoon), which means cheap eats and booze. Definitely look into it, mate.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I actually opted for Kanga House Hostel in Kings Cross. Equal distance from Bondi and Central. $132 a week and a 10% discount if you book for a month. Free breakfast and a workers list (sign up the night before and when gardening/removal work comes up they let you know).

Think I might be calling this place home for a while!
