 Weight Gain

PostPosted: Sun Sep 6, 2009 8:16 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

I head to Thailand on 22nd Oct, then onto Sydney on 7th Nov. I'm doing Ozintro from 9th Nov, then hanging around in Sydney until after NY.

Would be good to meet up in Sydney if you're around, where you staying for Xmas and NY. I'm at the Harbour City Backpackers, one of the less popular ones, but not to far to join in on the shenanigans.

Hit my first stumbling block with my running. I got awful shin splints and could hardly walk, and that was after just two days running...even got to special insoles that are supposed to stop it. Gonna keep at it this time though, thats usually my reason (or should I say excuse) for giving in.

You on facebook. If you are, add me (fizzi_fi@hotmail.com should find me).

Here are just a few tips that may help...

Starting with nutrition...
- Try and have smaller portions more often (there is a reason why athletes eat 6 times a day). It keeps your metabolism ticking over.
- If the above isn't possible try and switch your meals round i.e. have what you would have for dinner at lunch and vice versa. Why shove loads of wood on your fire when it's not going to be burnt up? You should be eating your biggest meal when you are most active, during the day.
- Water, can't stress this enough. Down a glass of water before you eat, it'll reduce your consumption.
- Water again. Hate to be vulgar but if you aint peeing clear then you aren't drinking enough.
- Look for alternatives; brown bread, wholemeal pasta, brown sugar, semi skimmed milk, dark chocolate, olive oil etc
- Never fry if you can help it, oven or better yet steam!
- Never skip breakfast. It actually has the opposite effect to what you think. It slows down your metabolism.
- Things that are marked 'light' people mistake for fat free. Read the packets of stuff you eat. You'd be suprised at the amount of rubbish you are putting into your body.
- If you want to get really technical you should be aiming for a split of 40/40/20 Carbs/Protein/Fat. (The fat must be good fats!)
- I would never recommend the atkins diet, you need carbs but in moderation. Avoid carbs before you go to sleep. It'll just be stored as fat while you sleep.
- We don't eat enough good protein, get stuck into the chicken, eggs and fish. For veggies the quorn range will give you enough protein.
- For those of you running, eat a banana before you do. It's not too heavy and will give you the energy you need for your run.
- If you have cereal in the morning consider sprinkling on some pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and goji berries. You can get these from holland and barrett.

These are all really small changes that you can make but they can have an effect. I did intend to write exercise advice too but it's late and I need sleep.

Someone flies out to Thailand in 20 hours...

Will come back to this another time...

Well I'll be getting to sydney around mid November, so we'll definitely have to meet up, havent decided where I'm gonna be staying first time I get there, but I'm in Wake-up for a week at Xmas, then the super duper new hostel in the rocks area for new year!! Its only a stumbling block in your head! LOL Yeah shinsplints isnt pleasent at all, but running on the beach is a pretty good cure for it to be honest, so lots of that in Oz!! lol!!

just because its more expensive in Oz doesn't mean you need to eat fast food all the time. When me and my boyfriend were travelling around we lived on pasta and beans on toast!

I think it is easier if you do settle down in a place in Oz for more than 2 or 3 days though as you can buy stuff and keep it in the fridge, which is difficult when you're always on the move!

Just keep active...walk everywhere and take in the sites, watch how much you drink and you shouldn't be eating chocolate out here because it is sooo expensive!!

If you still have a couple of months before you go check out this book 'idiot proof diet' by india knight and neris thomas. Based on a low carb, high protein idea but NOT atkins as can eat lots of veg etc. I've been on it for 8 days and lost 8lbs. I'm going travelling in may and hoping to be a size 12-approx. 2 stone lighter. Really easy to follow and it works!! good luck xx

This is exactly the reason why I put on weight! At 59 cents a bag, pasta is definitely the cheapest option but you need vegetables and meat (if non vegetarian). This time round I am going to spend the extra money so I will eat properly. And I may even steer clear of the goon. I'm sure that contributed to my waistline too!

Egg as well allegedly!

Everything in moderation! Everyone is different though, most blokes lose weight and a lot of girls put on. For me personally, I need to limit the carbs and eat more protein. But I am sure drinking goon and getting smashed 5 out of 7 nights a week is not really the way forward! Plus when I was doing office work in Sydney and gave up smoking, I was eating a ton of chocolate a day, so much so, that one day I gave myself a migraine and got sent home ha ha ha!

Congrats on shifting that near stone! That's an amazing achievement! Surely you must be able to see the benefits from before? And 11.5 stone is not very overweight - unless you are 3 ft tall. I weigh over 11 stone and I am a healthy size 10-12 (and I'm only 5ft 2!). I don't think the problem is your appearance, it sounds to me like you need to learn to love yourself. Without getting all Gok Wan on you, when you look in the mirror start focusing on parts that you like or think are ok instead of the parts you don't like. When I'm feeling really shit, I compliment myself and like a true geek, I keep a diary and even compliment myself in that ha ha! It really does work and what you really need is a confidence boost!
