Hi Tinkerbell.
I went to Thailand as my first port of call on my solo travels in 2007. I booked a hostel for my first few nights, but I needn't have bothered. I'd book for the first night (perhaps two nights, maximum) so you can find your feet. I didn't book any group things (but I do like my own company and am pretty independent) and I found Bangkok fine. I met a girl at the airport who stayed at my hostel, so it was pretty easy to meet people. I then made my way around Thailand alone and had few problems. Just try to stay around crowds at stations, etc., as there are weirdos there the same as anywhere else. I absolutely loved Thailand. I met some lovely locals on night trains, in guest houses, restaurants, etc., so enjoy! I am envious!
