 BEST AGE TO TRAVEL?

PostPosted: Fri Jul 24, 2009 7:28 am Reply to Message Reply with quote

Bit of an odd question this, but I'm wondering how old is the average backpacker?

You can travel at any age obviously but I'll be 26 when I visit south east asia in november for 6 weeks and feel I'm in the slightly older age group of backpackers! Am I right? Having been to hostels before I know that most hostellers are 18-25.

Would be good to hear from other guys and girls my age...

26 is young brah. Its once you hit mid 30's people start calling you old.

There are SO many people travelling. You will find anyone, of any age.

I'd say there are a few groups though - you get 18/19 year olds who have just finished college/starting uni.
Then there's a lot of people 21/22 just finished uni.
Then there's a lot of people 25-29 - I don't know what they've just done! Maybe people who have worked for a few years and saved/got bored?!

I mostly met older people. I'd say there are a decrease in people over the age of about 30, but of course there are still 30+ out there!
I met loads and loads of people - people over 45 and 55 and 65! There's everyone - and travellers all wanna get to know each other and hear each others stories, and meet new people so maybe you'll find that when you get out there and start chatting you won't worry about age. It's certainly not something that comes up in early conversation with that many people I met.

I think the age group I met the most was probably 25-29 year olds. Just because I think I'm a bit more mature for my age/not a big drinker blah blah...

I'm rambling anyway. Hope this makes some sense! You defo won't be alone out there as a 26 year old!

Totally agree with Denton, you'll meet people much older than you. The only time I felt a wee bit weird was in sydney when everyone in my dorm was under 20, it didn't stop me making friends with them though. It depends where you go, there are a lot of people straight out of school doing the east coast of oz, but in japan you rarely meet anyone under 25 in a hostel

I've just arranged to go travelling to India for 3 months at the beginning of Jan then Thailand, Cambodia etc. I'm 31 and was also worried about being older than the rest of the backpackers. I was also supposed to be going with my boyf but we split up so am going on my own now. Could do with a travel buddy

Im 30 and have been travelling on and off for over a decade now - Ive met people of all ages during my time, and been most surprised by that, given how much emphasis is put on gap years being for teens/fresh graduates etc.

If I was you I wouldnt worry too much about going it alone / being a touch older than a fair whack of those around you - pretty much any place well travelled will have a mix of age groups, but the important thing is, the people there will all pretty much be in the same boat and looking for others to meet up regardless of age etc

I went travelling round Eastern Europe this summer, and I was the youngest of most groups I hung out with, and I'm 24!! I'm planning my big life trip for when I'm 26, which I consider a good age to do it judging from people i've met in my shorter term travels.

I think mid-20s is the best age; you have more experience of life to be able to make the most of travel, with a more level head. Only problem is beyond the late 20s/early 30 the older you get after that, the more likely it is you'll need to settle with a career/partner/mortgage/etc. which are all not conducive to the freedoms of long-term travel.

I'm 31, mostly stay in private rooms in hostels with a friend when i do city breaks though, or proper hotels when i go on beach holidays. But for my rtw i am going on my own and doing the dorm room thing to make friends and save ££.

im 22 and leave just over 2 months to oz and then wherever else on one way tickets!! Very excited and cannot wait, been something i wanted to do for so long and finally feel ready with nothing holding me back now!!

I say best age to travel is when you feel ready to travel not when an "age" is place on you!!
