Just so everyone knows I have a FairFX card and managed to find a link online which meant I didn't have to pay for my card. I also found out u can apply for a second (actually up to 5) card to take which I will keep separate from my other cards incase my main one is lost. All I have to do is phone them and they will transfer all the funds onto the second card. And u can have 5 cards for free!!

cheers for that, did you get the US dollars one? As I'm going to Oz, thailand and SA it would probably make more sense for me to get that rather then the Euro???

I did have a look at the Claxton card but that didnt seem as good

I have nationwide debit card, this is more as a back up incase i lose my card as i cant get a replacement. I can then still transfer money from the nationwide to prepaid card in worst case senario (I hope!)

Good link explaining Nationwide and HSBC accounts. I think personally I will go with a Nationwide cash card for ATM withdrawals and a Santander Zero card for counter and online payments, while making sure I set up a direct debit paying it off immediately.

This is a hugely useful post - thanks everyone!!

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this but see money saving expert:

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money

It shows you the ins and outs of the best cards you can get.

To summarise it:

The Nationwide Debit card is the best with no fees for anything except a 1% Load.

For anyone that doesn't know what the load bit means..."Adding a 'load' on the exchange rate so £100 of foreign currency actually costs you £101" - So if you withdraw £100 out, it will cost you £101.

People are finding they are getting refused this card because they want you to use them as their main current account. However, as stated on the website you can supposedly get around this by opening up an e-saver, with a minimum of £1.

Downside to this: No section 75 of the Consumer Protection (that you get with credit cards)

So get a credit card aswell!

The Santander Zero is the best for this, with the only downside being that if you use it to withdraw money you with pay 27.9% interest even if you pay it straight off. This is roughly £2 a month per £100 withdrawn.

But, if you have you nationwide debit card...you will use that to withdraw instead.

Check it out and have a read through.

Matt

Hi, I'm really panicking now! I leave on 16.11 and applied for a Nationwide account a couple of weeks back. I have just moved home from London so only yesterday realised that I hadn't received anything in the post (I put my home address down). Anyway, after phoning them it turns out something went wrong with my online application and I'm not in the system!!

Just reapplied but will get something I need to sign within 5 working days then my card and pin in 7-10 working days! Can anyone reassure me that Nationwide work quickly lol! I leave in 12 days, what a nightmare!
