 Cheapest countries in the world?

Hi all,

This is only my second post so please be gentle. lol

I am very interested in what people think are the cheapest countries in the world to visit. I'm talking in terms of buying power when you get there rather than costs of flights etc.

I'm mostly interested in the opinions of Brits as it will be pounds that i'm converting into the local currency. Obviously exchange rates make a big difference to the buying power of tourists.

I would love to visit somewhere where i can eat in a good restaurant for a few pounds and get nice accommodation for the price of a hostel in a developed country.

So far I have heard that the Philippines and Uruguay are really cheap but i would love to hear from peoples first hand experiences!

I remember Nepal being insanely cheap, but that was back in 2002 so might be different now, but I doubt it would have changed too much.

Thailand and Laos are also very good value, even now with a crap pound.

Edit: A bit of googling produces this list of the cheapest countries:

Thailand
Indonesia
Malaysia
Laos
Vietnam
India
Nepal
Morocco
Egypt
Jordan
Turkey
Bulgaria
Hungary
Czech Republic
Mexico
Guatemala
Honduras
Bolivia
Peru
Ecuador
Venezuela

It depends where you go though- if you just go to Prague in the Czech Rep, then you will find western European/UK prices. Some of the costs were extortionate. But even in the outskirts of the city, things were far far cheaper, and in the lesser known places in the CR you get a huge meal and a beer or two for a fiver. Even Cesky Krumlov, which is turning into a hotbed for tourists, was about a third of the price of anything in Prague.

When travelling anywhere, keep off the tourist trail and the prices will inevitably come down. When going for a drink, avoid the Irish pubs and go down a back street to where the locals seem to go.

I work in Hungary at least once a month. Everywhere from Budapest to right down on the Romanian border. Granted it's cheaper once you're away from Budapest and Balaton, but I wouldn't call it cheap. Certainly not in the same league as India, or Bolivia, etc.
