hi, for a month do you rekon u can see alot on the rail pass?

i really dont know what to do, we are on a budget but can allow for the pass if it really is the best option, but obviously dont want to waste money.

So we are planning on going down to kyoto and nara and hiroshima etc and we have a month so will travel for 3 weeks then stay in tokyo for a week.

123bus.net does look good and im not bothered about overnight buses at all done loads before. so it looks like a good option but the JR pass looks likea good idea for convenience and its so quick?

just need some advice really so if anyone has stayed a month in japan and would suggest either to use the buses or the jr pass to get around osaka, toyko, hiroshima, maybe nagasaki and kyoto areas please can u help/advise on what would be best, cheers

When I was in Japan the rail pass was amazing. The pass does apply for a 7-14-21 day periods. Which starts on the day of your first trip.

The train is amazingly fast but it also applies to any buses which JRail operates. I think that this means that you can spend more time in the different parts of Japan and less time on trains.

But don't tell any Japanese person what you spent on your pass. Most of them don't know there is a different rate for foreigner and that it is such a discounted rate.

Japan was amazing. Have a blast. If you have any-other questions about Japan let me know. I was there a month for school and backpacking.

hey... i used a 3 week pass a for a months trip a few years ago, then a 1 week pass for 2 weeks travelling about 6 weeks or so ago... i'd say they're definately worth it... just plan your trip abit and you may find you don't need a 3 week pass for a month

if your spending a week in tokyo then you obviously need no more than 3 weeks... then if you're spending a week in (or around) kyoto you will only need a 2 week pass... nara is so close and costs about 12GBP return from kyoto, kobe and osaka are in similar price range too

the yen is so strong at the moment... when i went a few years back i got about 230 to the pound, a few weeks ago i was getting about 130... i wanted to stay there for 3 weeks but bailed after 2

hope some of this helps

i think for a month in japan a week in tokyo and kyoto respectively is well worth it. And you could use the 123bus.net or the JR lines buses between the cities. Then get the two week pass and rinse it in the last two weeks.

Remember you can see loadsa stuff just on day trips from Kyoto or Osaka. Its just trying to work out how much you will need it!

I didnt get the full rail pass but the kansai region one, which allowed me to do 4 day trips from Kyoto. Which was fine for me at the time as i only had two weeks and it only cost me 80quid!

I would stay in Ginza for at least one night to see the Tsukiji Fish Market. Best to go at about 3am so you need to stay within walking distance.

Roppongi is the best area for nightlife and Shibuya for shopping. I would recommend moving around every couple of days to get a real feel for the different districts.

As for size, Tokyo is just less than 1400 square miles, Greater London is less than half of that. It's a big place!

There is a wee map on this page that will give you a better idea of the enormity of Tokyo.
