 Is a Cannon EOS 1000D a good camera to take around the world?

pentax k-m gets better reviews than 1000d from a beginners point of view, cheaper too

Much better lenses when you go Canon though, and that counts for a lot.

I think the 1000D is a decent piece of kit. Nice and small too.

Even though I'd take Canon or Nikon over any other make, you can't ignore the Sony Alpha range as a beginner. Their lenses are getting better all the time, and the best thing about them from a beginner's perspective is that they have anti-shake built into the body of the camera. To get anti-shake on most other makes of DSLR, you have to buy a lens with it built in, and the lenses that have it are very expensive by comparison.

So, maybe look at the lower-end Sony Alphas too. You can't go too far wrong with the Canon, though.
