How can I become qualified to become a ski instructor in the UK?

PostPosted: Sat Apr 19, 2008 9:51 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

I have been skiing for 7 years now, and I'm sure my skiing is up to a good standard to go on to an instructors course. What are the ways I can go about doing this? During my gap year I plan to travel to different countries to instruct so I need a qaulification that will allow me to do so.

Thanks

Try the British Association of Snowsport Instructors, they should give you all the information you need. Is nobody capable of googling? The Internet is a wealth of information, you just have to search for it.

should have mentioned that I did find BASI, was wondering if they were my only option though. It seems like they are for gaining the Level 2 Alpine qualification.

I love the sound of the 10 week GAP courses, but they are crazy expensive. Looks like they are a lot of fun though and a great way to learn. But can I ask how these students can afford the £6000? My parents or I could never come up with that money. Is there a sensible way to finance such a course, or are some people just lucky to have parents who will pay a respectable sum towards to course?

That got me thinking, it would be great to set up a group of 10 of us here to go on to one of the courses BASI offer. The course is only £500 for 12 days. Only problem is that is starts in 3 months and you will need to have completed the level 1 course first.

I would talk to the BASI and try talking to people at a ski slope in the UK. If having such a qualification will allow you to gain suitable employment and earn a reasonable income (enough that you'd be happy doing it as a career), then it could be worth taking out a career development loan to allow you to do it. It sounds like a lot of money, but if you're serious and it's what you need to start your career then it will be worth it. It's better to spend real money on a worthwhile course than less money on a worthless course. Just make sure it is THE course to do.

I did my BASI level 2 snowboard a few year ago and it did cost me an arm an a leg on one of the courses! around 6k i think but every thing was included i.e food lift pass which in Val d'isere is close to a k! all the tuition you get from BASI and local french schools And your accomodation and meet some good peeps! but if you find out where and when the Courses are running to get your Level 2 could cost less than £1500, a mate of my sorted his own acc. out got a job and jumped on the course with everyone else. fuck he even ate free most nights. saved himself a wedge.
Val d'isere is a wicked place to party and ride! i loved it that much i stayed there for 2 years.
As for doing BASI at home suppose it would be Scotland! not very nice compared to Europe riding.

We actually run 3-week instructor courses for a lot cheaper, so if you are keen to get qualified as an instructor and work that same season have a look at our websites:

http://www.nonstopski.com
http://www.nonstopsnowboard.com

We'll even help you find a job and accommodation for the season! You can then get trained up by the ski/snowboard school you work for and get your level 2 - then you can teach all over the world!

ELITE

We run a 4 week course which is designed to help individuals with no teaching experience become ski instructors, and even help them get a job.
www.eliteskiinstructortraining.com

We are based in Thredbo Australia with on hill accommodation. The price is exceptional compared to similar programs especially when you compare our mountains stats. www.eliteskiinstructortraining.com/the%20difference.html
It' a great way to get a start into the industry. Our course is early in the season so you are qualified and ready to start work when the busy period starts. We want you to get trained so you can get out there and earn some money for yourself.

There are job opportunities at the end of the program with Thredbo Snowsports School.
