Suitcase or Backpack for year in Canada?

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie & wanted to say hi! I'm off to Canda in October to do the ski season in Fernie BC and after that maybe head to Vancouver. I have a year's working holiday visa and I'm not sure what luggage to tale!

As we're not travelling around too much and we will have our snowboards I'm not sure whether it will be easier for us to take suitcases as we will have a bit of boarding gear with us which won't fit in with our boards, any advice would be great!

I took a wheely case when I was over there with a holdall for whenever I went out into the wilds; depends on your personal preferance really. I found most people were split 50/50 on what they used for their luggage.

I took a wheely case to Canada as well, was a bit of a pain in the arse getting it up and down stairs though.

Does your board bag have straps to put it on your back or just handles? If you're carrying your board I'd take a backpack, if your board's going on your back then take a case I'd say.

I would personally take a backpack. I think they are easier and more comfortable to travel with over all terrain. Backpacks do seem to be able to cope with more incliment weather as well. Berghaus do, do a backpack that has wheels on it. It has full hiking shoulder and waist straps for carrying it on your back; and these then zip away (with no impact on the space within the bag) to allow you to wheel it along as a suitcase. Very comfy piece of kit that I used for my Duke of Edinburgh award as well as family holidays. Hope this is of some help!
