hi,

I'm about to go off traveling for 6 months and i was wondering how people have managed their insulin while traveling? I've got these frio things to keep the insulin cool, but i cant carry 6 months worth of insulin, and don't know if i'll be able to get the same type of insulin out in south america. even if someone could post some out to me, it wont be kept cool so i'm having a bit of a dilemma working out what to do. any advice would really really be appreciated. Thanks!

I have never been able to find this out, however I've never been abroad long term so not had to look too much into it yet.

You can get insulin abroad, but no idea where you can buy it from or if you need a local prescription first or what.

I expect it won't be cheap though.

The frio pouch things have worked really well for me, only issue I had was in Norway in February where it froze solid along with the insulin, though to be fair it was pretty damn cold.

Try contacting a travel clinic - the doctors there should be able to tell you how you can get hold of insulin in other countries (they must get asked this kind of stuff all the time) and answer any other travel/health questions you have too

Can you not just take more than one frio pack with you? i no that sounds like a stupid answer, but cant you take an XL one fitting about 20 cartridges in and say a small which fits about 10 cartridges in. but i guess it all depends on what types of insulin youre on. check with your doctor and make sure you plan plan plan. also check if your type of insulin isnt avaliable what types are and you may even have to use the two injections a day if your insulin ran out or did get damaged so take that into consideration also.
hmmmm but basically top tip book an appointment with you GP.

I would speak to your diabetes nurse - they seem to have the most 'practical' knowledge. A GP is generally not so up on diabetes related stuff!

Also contact Diabetes Uk and/or Novo (or whoever manufactures your insulin) and ask them if you can get it in the countries you are going to and how to get it - over the counter/prescription etc.

My backpack is gonna be like a portable bloody chemist - try packing 6 months worth of insulin pump supplies!!

Katie
