I was wondering if anyone had flown with Air Asia? I have been looking for flights to Bangkok for xmas as i want to head down to Koh Phangan for the Full moon party. Everything i have checked on travel supermarket has been £500+ yet when i checked on air asia to KL i found on for £328 inc of taxes. Surely this can't be right or there is some sort of catch?

Also, how easy / cheap is it to get from KL to Koh Phangan?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as i am booking on Sunday night.

Also, bit of a daft question but do you get in flight entertainment with this airline? Just the thought of a long haul flight with sweet F*** All to do is enough to consider spending more money!

There's plenty of threads on here about Air Asia mate.

They can be very cheap - even cheaper than the quote you've found. The catch is that they're no frills, so don't expect the perks of the major airlines. In-seat entertainment on most of their longhaul planes comes in the form of rented portable systems, as opposed to fixed-seat entertainment. And on many of their longhaul planes, the seats don't recline - they just slide downwards, which can be a bit of a squeeze if you're tall. But you get what you pay for, and if price is your main factor, then go for it. Remember that they also charge about £20 for meals and 20kg baggage (they only offer 15kg as standard).

Getting from KL to Ko Pha Ngan is easy. Take a sleeper train all the way up to Surat Thani in Thailand (changing trains at the border town Sungai Kolok), and then jump on a 4 hour boat out to Ko Pha Ngan via Samui. Or you could take a bus. Either way, at today's exchange rates it'll cost about £25 tops and will take you the best part of a day. The sleeper trains on that line are nice though, and so are the ones you'll change to in Thailand.

Your other option would be to fly to Koh Samui from KL with Firefly Airlines and then jump on one of the regular 30 minute boats from Samui to Pha Ngan. Just be mindful of the fact that they fly out of a smaller airport in KL - Subang - so don't rock up to the main airport in KL expecting to catch your Firefly flight.

You can expect to pay around £70 inc taxes for a one way fare from KL to Koh Samui with Firefly. Sometimes it’s cheaper, and other times it’s more expensive. Book as far in advance as possible for the best fares, and keep an eye out for promos. Book directly on their own website.

I love flying, but personally, I'd take the train.

Cheers for the info mate. Will definitely be going with them as i can handle "roughing it" on a flight. The idea of paying £200 more does strike me as a little daft, even if it does mean being crammed in a bit and not having the best in flight entertainment!

I'll probably get the train from KL as it seems like a bit more fun and also, clearly going to be cheaper.

The only issue that i have with going with air asia is the possibility of delays etc as i have to be there no later than 28th December. Have you known of any problems with the long haul flights being delayed or cancelled even?

They've shifted their timetables around a bit recently without giving much notice to passengers, but that's more to do with increasing their services from London to KL to 7 times a week from 5.

They occasionally run late on the longhaul routes, but no moreso than other airlines really.

Singapore Airlines - a very nice airline - are running really good promo to Singapore and Australia at the moment. I doubt they'll have many decent fares around Xmas, but it might be worth looking. They've been getting seriously cheap lately, and by flying to Singapore you're only looking at spending a few more hours on the same train to Thailand as you would from KL. The train starts in Singapore before heading to KL and then up through Malaysia.

Give it a squiz.

Went with Air Asia in the end. Cost me £356 all inclusive of tax, baggage and meals as well as £4 for some sky bus thing which i have no idea what it is!

Any ideas for accomodation in KL and also Koh Phangan?

It's a coach service between the city (KL) and the airport run by Air Asia.

I stayed at the Classic Inn Budget Hotel near Imbi monorail station in KL, which was alright and very conveniently located.

try hua leum resort in had rin, it was close enough to be handy and far enough away to be safer. Its run by a norwegian guy so dont expect to be ripped off. And it was cheap!

Theres plenty of decent budget options in chinatown,KL!
