 Transport within Countires/continents

PostPosted: Thu Jul 16, 2009 11:43 am Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hi, im doing a 10 month RTW trip, starting Nov 2009. Me and my boyfriend are planning everything ourselves, couldnt be bothered using STA or similar.
We have all of the main "continent-to-continent" flights booked :
London-Malaysia
Bali-Darwin
Melbourn-LA
LA-Cuba
Cuba-Ireland(Finish)

My question is should i be worried about booking my transport within each country or just "go with the flow" Which is what we have been planning to do all along. just starting to get a bit anxious now as the trip is drawing closer

Any advice would be great!!

Go with the flow, you'll be fine.

How much have you spent on flights then? You've bought them all individually?
Have you realised you're going to have to swim across the Irish Channel?

Ah well i am living in london now so will not need a flight here and i plan on staying in reland at the end of the trip so will not need a flight back here.... Ive thought of everything - lol

The flights have been really cheap (so i think - its my first time doing anything like this). London to Kuala Lumper - £150, Bali-Darwin - £35, Mel-LA - £600, LA-Cuba £100 and I havnt booked Brazil - Ire yet, but im thinking that may be around £300/400.

I was happy enough with the prices as STA charge you a lot and you dont get to go everywhere you want with them.

Just gonna use buses/trains to get around each country.

Have you done much travelling ?

I think it all comes down to the consultant that you speak to... i bought some flights at great prices (i think!) at sta travel last month. they couldnt beat my air asia flight to australia but I got a flight from sydney to LA (via auckland) on air new zealand for 305 pounds inc tax and then LA - Quito for 120 and sao paulo to london for 220 pounds. they didnt even mind that i bought my flight to oz seperately. the prices were much cheaper than what i could find online but i think you have to be under 26 or a student to get them...

I've done a fair bit:- India, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, East and West Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, China, Tibet, Morocco, Tunisia, and Krakow.

The only time I used an organised tour was in Africa, and even then I booked it when I reached South Africa (and while it was good I do feel I could have done some of it independently better). You definitely will be fine organising it when you're there for all places.

Thats really good! The cheapest i could find from OZ to USA, was £600. I never really thought of using STA for indiviual flights, i just looked at there itineries, and saw they only covered some places we wanted to go, so i gave up on them then

There's tons more options than are shown in their suggested itineraries or online planner. Don't assume that the options on their website are all the options you can get. While rtw tickets do have some limits to the routes, they still offer a lot of options that will generally fit in with whatever trip you want. For instance I was able to go back on myself through Africa instead of continuing round the world to the america's as most rtw planners would assume. You just need to speak to an adviser. The restrictions are due to the airline groups that offer the rtw tickets and the routes that they fly.
