Hi, Im a 21 year old uk student, and id really like to spend about a month abroad doing something amazing this summer. Id quite like to go to thialand, india or africa, figi or some far flung destination (not europe). Ive come across a few placements which do combo stuff and id really like to do that, for example working with orphans or working with elephants or monkeys or something. But I also want an orginisation where time is spent doing excursions and fun activities like surfing, or just activities in general! has anyone had any great experiences with a particular company, or could nudge me in the right direction? Many thanks!

Hey there Siobhan,

I'm guessing by your name that I'm writing to a fellow Irish woman! I just read your post about volunteering! I actually coordinate a volunteer and community development programme in South Africa which I think could interest you. The programme itself charges no administration fees, if you come for just one month you will have to pay accommodation (approx €70per week depending on the exchange rate) and food and you can volunteer in the local primary school teaching English and get involved in other community development work.

The great thing about what we are doing is that we take each volunteer individually, find out what their interests and skills are and plan their pragramme accordingly. You would have free time in the afternoons and at weekends and there are plenty of fun activities in the area. While these aren't included as we don't charge programme fees you would have lots of spare cash to spend on them. We also run the volunteer programme from a backpackers which is where you would be living, not in a dorm don't worry! This means that there are always travellers passing through to hang out with and a lively bar and social life!

The backpackers we are based in is Tube 'n Axe Backpackers in Storms River, 15 minutes away from the world's highest bungee and home to blackwater tubing and two variations on zipslide tours! We are also only an hour away from Jeffrey's Bay which is a world renowned surf spot so surfing is also an option. We are also the closest village to the Tsitsikamma National Park where you can easily spend a day or two hiking! This means lots of access to fun activities! Check it out online at www.tubenaxe.co.za or e-mail me at stormsriverproject@gmail.com if you have any questions!

Hey, Think Pacific might be a good choice - they combine volunteering with treks, kayaking, diving etc as an 'island expedition'. it's a very tough experience, living in the remote villages with cold bucket showers every day, no electricity, plenty of mozzies, and pit tolets! but the projects are doing amazing things for the local people and it's a very humbling experience. At weekends you do activity stuff and you start and end at some lovely beach resorts - but the main bit is the volunteering. I absolutely fell in love with Fiji and can't wait to go back; the cutest kids, the loveliest people in the world and just so, so beautiful. Here's some more info..

A company called Ticket to Ride combine surfing with volunteering in costa rica too. I was looking into that one a while ago.

hope you have a great time, wherever you end up!
