 Real Gap Costa Rica

PostPosted: Sat Aug 16, 2008 9:17 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hey,

I've only recently found out that I'm having a gap year and was looking at the real gap website and I'm paticularly interested in either the conservation of sloths or baby turtles in Costa Rica!

So I just wanted to know if anybody has done or knows much about these placements, real gap or generally about volunteering in Costa Rica. Or even if anyone is planning on doing one of these 2009 =o)

Search the forums for Real Gap/realgap and you will get a whole lot of opinions. Costa Rica is an amazing country. I have been here for 4 weeks and I have 2 weeks to go and i dont want to leave. If you have a good search online I am pretty certain you can find some cheaper companies than Gap! If you do decide to head to Costa Rica, make sure you learn at least the basics of Spanish as I came here speaking none at all and have had a very steep learning curve, a lot of people do not speak or understand English!

Sorry it has taken me a while to reply as I was off exploring Costa Rica for 2 weeks and then settling back in at home again now I am back in cold rainy Ireland.
I was doing a study abroad course on Inter-American Human Rights in Heredia which is about 30 minutes outside San Jose. I did that for 4 weeks and then I spent 2 weeks travelling with Gap Adventures which was great fun. There are so many wonderful places to go and visit, my favorite being Manuel Antonio, Arenal and Tortuguero. If you want to do turtle conservation Tortuguero is the place to go.

Hi Rosie,

If you are still thinking about Costa Rica, just to let you know I work for a non-profit volunteer organisation called Tropical Adventures. We are based in Costa Rica and place volunteers in projects such as teaching English in schools, turtle conservation, work in a retirement home, indigenous projects and work in national parks.

One thing to watch out for when you are looking for projects is that many of the 'Gap Year' organisations make a lot of profit on you so the money you put in doesn't reach those that you are really trying to help.

Tropical Adventures offers you all the support and benefits of these large organisations without making any profit. We also offer tours and activities for our volunteers before and after their projects (e.g. Spanish lessons, surfing, rainforest hikes, volcano viewing, zip-line tours etc) and you can be sure of very personalised attention - our volunteer and project coordinators will go out of their way to make sure you are happy.

Please check out our website at www.tropicaladventures.com and feel free to contact me at intern@tropicaladventures.com if you have any questions.

Happy Travels,

Sarah
