Hi,
I'm considering doing some voluntary work with children in Brazil and I have been looking at Rio, Salvador or Florianopolis. Does anyone recommend any of these?
Also, just how safe is it how there, I have read and heard stories of muggings and high knife and gun crime if resisted in a mugging. Just how bad is this out there? I really want to go but also want to feel safe!!

Thanks in advance people.
Katy

Look, there is always a risk of crime in South America, but provided you're not daft, there's a good chance you won't even see any, let alone be involved in it.

Then again, these things do happen, and it's always a good idea to be prepared for it. Never struggle against anyone who wants your stuff, it's just not worth it (although when in that situation everyone reacts differently, I nearly had a brawl in the street with someone, which was a bit daft). Just have a small amount of cash tucked away that you can hand over.

Your stuff can be replaced.

You can't.

(Unless your parents have a spare).
