I did Camp America in 2006 and had such an awesome time, went back to my camp in 2007, though I went with CCUSA in 07 as they were cheaper and paid better than CA. I'd highly recommend it if you love working with kids (which if you're thinking of being an AuPair I'm sure you do) and have an open minded attitude as camp can be quite rustic and emotionally and physically straining!
My advice would be to have a look at the different companies that offer summer camps in the USA, CA, CCUSA, BUNAC and there is another, I just can't remember it's name - it's not as well known as the other 3.
In 2005 I applied for camp with CA in January and they didn't place me anywhere - gutted. I applied again in 2006 and went to a Camp Directors fair to make sure I secured my self a job rather than relying on CA. It worked and it was a lovely camp, co-ed, private traditional activities, exactly the type of camp I'd hoped to get a job at!
I've had a few friends who have also applied and found them selves not to have jobs for that summer, both of them had gone with CCUSA, but in fairness one did apply at the end of April when a lot of camps had already recruited all their staff, and the other had her departure date as the day before the last day CCUSA would allow, so that really limited which camps she could work at. The latter applied again for this summer, but she got her application done in September last year and within a month or two had been placed at a camp (even with similar late date restrictions). Another friend of mine also applied in September last year and had been placed at a really good camp before Christmas ready for this summer!!!
So yes, my advice would be to apply in September as soon as the applications open. CA, CCUSA, BUNAC etc. don't get many applications at that time of the year so they can really take time over your application and placing you. Plus there's a discount if you apply early - think of what you can do with that extra money when traveling afterwards!
If when it comes to January/Febuary time and you still haven't been placed, if your company holds Camp Directors fairs (CCUSA and CA certainly do) I'd go to one and try and get your self a job... but do your research before you go so you know which camps you'd like to work at and you can just go straight to their tables!
If you have any more questions about Camp (afraid I don't know much about AuPair) Shout up and I'll try to answer them!
Be aware that different companies charge you different application fee's. Different companies will also give you different wages - even for doing the same job. When I looked into this in 2007, Camp America seemed to charge the most and pay the least, though this could have changed now! |
