so i had planned to go with REAL GAP but after hearing so many bad things about them i am seriously doubting it. there is another website that looks good called

www.workandvolunteer.com

its around the same prices as real gap. i dont mind paying this ammount if i will be with a company, have accomodation arranged and will have someone there to talk to if need be.

i tried going on websites for volunteering directly but i coulndt find a suitable project for me.

please any information would be really appreciated.

Hi Jessica,

Have a look at www.icye-steps.org >> there are lots of projects working in orphanages and schools across the world and the organisation is a well regarded small charity who have an office run by local people in every country they work in. They're well known for offering excellent volunteer support and it sure beats paying one of the big profit-making organisations! Good luck

Hi,

Where were you interested in working in an orphanage? I volunteered with www.thepodsite.com, teaching in Thailand and I found them to be offer a very good balance between offering support and being too 'hand-holdy'. They're a not for profit organisation, so the placements aren't too pricey and they do orphanage placements in Vietnam and Peru.

Obviously I can only really vouch for the placement I did but I wouldn't hesitate to go with them again myself.

Just something else for you to have a look at.

i was really interested in volunteering in thailand although africa also appealed to me. the reason i want to work with younger children is because i think it would be really hard to teach english? how did you find it?

thank you for the website, it looks really good

hi there!

if you're interested in volunteering in uganda, i'd definitely recommend the volunteer support network. they give you cultural training & as much support as you need. i had a wonderful experience with them at an orphanage in kampala!

The teaching placement I did was the one on Koh Phangan for 2 months and it was with younger children. The teaching was pretty tough at times, but not really for the reasons I imagined it being before I went out there. In fact I imagine the orphange work being tougher in some ways.

If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask me, or give them a call because they're really nice and helpful.

Hi,
I had my gap year last year and I went to Senegal in West Africa with a company called Projects Abroad. I wasn't actually working in an orphanage, I was in a kindergarten, but I do know that P A offers projects in orphanages in loads of other countries, including quite a few in Africa. Their website is www.projects-abroad.co.uk. There are loads of pictures, and volunteer stories etc which should help you make up your mind! Hope this helps.
