 AFRICA - Volunteer work

OMG this is the most useful forum ever. I have been doing weeks of research already trying to find a decent voluntary org to go with. I was considering going with REAL GAP until I come on here and saw the reviews and its put me off competely. So I find myself back at square one yet again!!!

I want to go to Africa/South Africa and do voluntary work in Wildlife and conservation. For a number of reasons, I absolutely love wildlife and its always been my dream to see african animals in their natural habitat. I want experience of working with them so if I really enjoy it it could open up a new opportunity to do something different career wise back home and I think doing this sort of trip to Africa would just be a amazing life experience (plus everyone always seems to go to OZ, I want to go somewhere different!!)

Anyway, my question to you guys is, does anyone know of any good organisations for voluntary work in Africa? Someone who aren't going to rip me off. I don't mind paying money to cover my food, accommodation and support but I object to giving money to places who just use volunteers as a profitable business. Thanks alot for any advice

I booked through travellers worldwide >> to go to Zimbabwe but once I got there, the project was actually run by AFRICAN IMPACT >>. I can really recommend them as I had a brilliant time and they really helped the local community as well as giving me a great experience with animals. I cant wait to go again and will definatly book direct with African impact >> next time!

I have no personal experience with these but I do know a girl (vet school applicant) who took part in the programme below and totally loved it as it involved hands-on experience with animals

African Conservation Experience >>

If i had the money I'd definitelly go for this one!

You can find some excellent advice on what to ask companies when deciding on a volunteer project at http://www.ethicalvolunteering.org/. For more reviews on companies visit the following:

I hope you find something and have a brilliant volunteer experience.

I went with these guys (though to Moholoholo, not Shimongwe) and they were awesome! And despite not being vet students it was pretty hands on, we helped dart a rhino, an antelope and a giraffe, hand reared a hippo, cheetah and warthogs... awesome!
