 Original Fundraising Ideas???

PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2009 9:56 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hi everyone,

My college is celebrating its centenary this year and are doing a cultural visit to a Malawian college. Part of the trip will be to help refurbish several classrooms of the college. The college has asked students to write an application as to why they would be suitable to go. Well, I've done that bit and have an interview soon. If chosen to go, I, along with the others chosen will have to raise £300. We can do this as a group or we can do it on our own, or both.

Now, my question to you all is, do you have any original ideas to help fundraise. I've done a sponsored abseil before which was great and I raised over £100, but I'm trying to think of different things that a group of people could do together. I'm hoping that if I have a few ideas under my belt for the interview I might stand a better chance of being chosen.

We don't have a student union or any college nights so thought it might be an idea to get some of the college bands to host a night of music and cheap booze and we charge at the door. Although I'm not sure how much organising that will take as I believe the trip to Malawi is taking place at the end of March , start of April.

Any ideas at all would be a great help!

Thanking you all

An idea that worked well for me and could be combined with a Uni music night was a pub quiz. Ask a local pub/venue to use a room (for free as you bring in a lot of custom), ask local businesses to donate prizes (for example a restuarant might give a dinner for 2) in return for a little publicity. Then charge a few quid for entry. You can add a raffle or something too. If you and the others going to Malawi do it together then 50 people should be easy-3 pounds each is 150 and there is no outgoing costs.

my friends did a similar thing to zimbabwe a few years back - and they did all the fundraising as a group.

the main thing they did was a local production - they hired a small local theatre for the night pretty cheap & did a show. then obviously made their money on ticket prices. if you have some good friends with a bit of talent perhaps they'd help you with the show even if they aren't on the trip.

i think another thing they did was bag-packing - i.e contacting a local supermarket and offering to pack peoples bags when they're at the checkout, and ask for a donation afterwards. naturally saturday mornings/afternoons are the most popular shopper times so this is best when to do it & its best done on shifts. eg 6 people do 9am-11am, 11am-1pm, 1-3pm etc.

good luck x

Thanks for all the ideas. If I'm chosen to go I'll definitely make those suggestions to everyone else.

Broke, If chosen and I do the climb, I'll hold you to that £25.78 sponsor. (whats with the 78p btw)?

Thanks guys!

Hey,

Just thought I'd let you know that I was offered a place on the trip! We leave on the 2nd of May for a week. So we've got 6 weeks to fundraise. I thinki we'll be having a meeting this week to discuss fundraising ideas.

I'm so excited! When I'm there I'll be filming a documentary, but I'll also be making video blogs on the lead up as well, so I mite set up an account on getjealous for that.

You know, a great way to make a few pence is to organise an in-college bakery! Get your apron and oven gloves out and bake some cupcakes to sell for 50p each via your college cafeteria (get the head teacher to give you the go-ahead).

Everyone loves cupcakes, and when people know it's for a good cause it makes them even better! Make Mondays bakery day, and cook 12-24 cupcakes. In a month you could have almost £50!

Simple to make too -

4oz (120g) Self Raising Flour
4oz (120g) Sugar
4oz (120g) Margarine/softened butter
2 eggs
Couple of drops vanilla essence (optional)

Add the lot to a mixing bowl. Use an electric whisk to whisk until smooth, divide the mixture between 12 cupcake cases and bake in the oven at 200C (gas mark 7) for 20 minutes or until they are golden brown on top and upon inserting a knife into the centre it comes away clean. Allow to cool then add icing (icing sugar with a spoonful of margarine or soft butter and a few drops of vanilla essence mixed until it's smooth. Add more icing sugar or butter to get the right consistency).

To make chocolate versions just substitute 1oz (30g) of flour with cocoa powder. Add chocolate chips, or cherries, raisins, desiccated coconut or anything that takes your fancy!
