Hey there,
So, I was traveling through South Africa and ended up visiting a little village at the end of the Garden Route called Storms River, fell in love with the place and stayed!
The story is that I am currently teaching in the local township school and working in a backpackers here for food and accommodation. The owner of the backpackers has recently built a four room building on the property which he wants to use for volunteers, I am helping him set up the programme!
Basically we're trying to reach out to people who would like to spend some time volunteering in Africa but don't want to pay the costly administration fees of big companies. Our plan as it stands is that short-term volunteers (1 week - 2 months) will basically pay accommodation cost of R795 per week to share a twin room with any other volunteers here during that time and we will, through communication with the volunteer, the school, and a local creche we also work with, plan an individual volunteering programme for you. It does not necessarily have to be teaching, we also want to get some vegetable gardens planted, the school needs some repairwork done, and anyone capable of helping to build a playground would be welcome as the children have nowhere but the streets to play in. Music, dance and artistic skills are also welcome as the children love to be creative, they love to dance, sing and even rap in Xhosa!
If you have a few months to spare then we will also work on a case by case basis but we will try to work you into a situation where you do your voluntary work maybe in the mornings and if we can we will also find some work for you here in the backpackers whereby you work for accommodation. This allows people who are strapped for cash to come and spend some time living in the real South Africa. Storms River is a tiny, one-street town with a few guesthouses and the main population is the township. It is a safe and friendly place, the kind where everyone greets each other on the street as they pass.
Anyway, if you are interested maybe check out the website, www.tubenaxe.co.za, contact us on info@tubenaxe.co.za or look on our facebook (Tube 'n Axe) as I'm currently getting some photos uploaded! It's a work in progress but I come home from school everyday with a smile on my face and I'd love to give other people the chance to experience working with the children here!
P.S. Sorry if this post is a bit longwinded! |
