Help promote and build sustainable community
The Self Help Community Center currently has two volunteer positions available.
• Volunteer teachers to share teaching ideas, and help create partnerships with schools around the world.
• A videographer and film editing volunteer to create a video portraying the incredible effect of the Self Help Community Center on the greater community.
I have been serving as volunteer coordinator at the Self Help Community Center for nearly two months and I love it! I am sending this information in the interest of ensuring that this establishment has the support it needs to continue its important work.
The Self Help Community Center (www.shcccambodia.org) is an organization just 9 kilometers outside the city of Siem Reap in Cambodia. This well organized, locally run NGO has been serving its community for nearly two years. The goal of the establishment is to build sustainable community with an emphasis on a free, quality education in organic gardening, basket weaving (a significant portion of the local economy), animal husbandry, sports, music, and English. SHCC does not replace the education of the government school but rather compliments it with extracurricular activities that are absent in the local Khmer school.
There are currently well over 600 students enrolled at SHCC and its services continue to be in high demand. The students represent 17 villages. The demands on the school’s resources are significant and it is only able to continue serving the community thanks to the support of volunteers from the global community. We need your skills and ideas!
• SHCC is currently looking for ways to create partnerships with other schools around the world while also inviting new ideas to SHCC classrooms. We invite international teachers to visit and be a part of the English teaching classes. Teachers are also welcome to engage in gardening activities and guitar lessons. All English and gardening classes are taught by Khmer teachers and your job would be to collaborate with the teacher on their lesson plan for that day.
• SHCC is also looking for someone with a video camera and skills in filming and editing. You would have the incredible opportunity of working closely with the school and village of Kra Bie Riel to create a 10 minute documentary film of the effect of SHCC on its greater community.
Note:
• Unlike most NGO’s we will not charge you a fee to work with us. We believe it should be left up to the individual to choose if they would like to donate.
• However, we are happy to receive contributions. We are supported entirely through the goodwill of current and former volunteers.
• You are welcome to visit SHCC and we have no set amount of time that you must volunteer with us. However we do prefer that volunteers spend at least a week if possible.
For more information on SHCC please refer to their website: www.shcccambodia.org
I am happy to answer any questions you might have and can also connect you with references from former volunteers.
