 Ghana:Volunteer or Backpack?

Hi everyone,

I'm a 25 year-old guy born and rised in London Town despite both my parents been born in Ghana, I (am quite ashameded to say) have never been.

That's something I'm looking to rectify by the end of the year or, at very worst, early next year but I just wanted to ask a couple of things as I start to get my plans off the ground...

Because of work constraints I will only have a couple of weeks and would quite like to do some volunteering as it's something that I've always wanted to do and I couldn't think of anywhere better to do it than in the country in which my roots lie. My other thought is that it might be better to just take a backpack and travel around the country as I might not get to see much of it if I spent the majority of the time volunteering.

I guess what I'm asking for are people's experiences of backpacking and volunteering...

-What companies people volunteered with?

-Whether it's better to get a tour if you're back packing or just go solo?

-What companies get tours with

-How expensive it was?

etc etc
Thanks in advance

Hey there Chigady,

I reckon that you should stick to backpacking. Volunteering programmes are, for the most part, fairly expensive especially if you are only able to go for a couple of weeks. If you have a smallish budget then I reckon that you would get more out of your trip if you are backpacking.

I'm going to Ghana next year - volunteering for three months and then cycling around the southern part of the country for two. For the backpacking/cycling part I'm planning on being able to live on $20 a day. On top of that you obviously have flights (hopefully around the £400 mark), visa (£30 for single entry) and vaccinations (I think the three you have to get done privately are Yellow Fever: £47, Meningitis £45 and Rabies: £135).

Hi have you thought of volunteering. Lattitude have some great placements short and long there, you will really get under the skin of the country. http://lattitude.org.uk/master_template.aspx?PageId=9611&contentURL=4
