 HELP CAN'T MAKE A DECISION

PostPosted: Tue Jul 7, 2009 2:49 am Reply to Message Reply with quote

A THE MOMENT ME AND MY BOYFRIEND ARE IN LAOS: WE HAVE THE CHANCE TO VOLUNTEER FOR 1 YEAR. THE WORK WILL BE INTERESTING - WE HOPE. WE PAY FOR OUR VISA 400 POUND THEY PAY IT BACK WHEN WE COMPLETE THE YEAR.
WE GET A HOUSE TO LIVE IN AND 1 MEAL A DAY, AND A MOUNTAIN BIKE TO GET ROUND ON. WE MAY GET A LITTLE PAYMENT LATER IN THE YEAR.
THE SHOWER DOESNT WORK, AND ITS A HARD SLOG UP MUDDY ROADS AND HILLS TO AND FROM WORK.

OPTION 2 WE RETURN TO CHINA AND TEACH CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH, FREE ACCOMADATION, FREE FOOD AND PAID VISA ALONG WITH 400-600 YAUN A MONTH.STAY AS LITTLE OR AS LONG AS WE WANT.

WE CAN'T DECIDE WHAT TO DO, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
WE PLAN TO CONTINUE TRAVELLING AFTERWARDS. MY BOYFRIEND DOESN'T HAVE MUCH FUNDS ATM.
SHOULD WE CHOOSE CULTURE OR MONEY?

ALL OPINONS APPRECIATED

NIKKI

OK, I've never been to either places, but personally I'd go with China to teach, and return to Laos to visit again.

Hi Nicki

Have you already been to China then? It depends on how much you want to experience life in Laos. A year sounds like a long time doing the same thing for no money and with no working shower :0S

Also, if your boyfriend doesn't have any money at the mo, how will you afford to continue travelling afterwards?

From what you've said I would teach in China then when you can afford it spend a few weeks/months in Laos later on x

Hi Nikki,

you've clearly been to china before - is the work placement in a city you know? Is it possible to volunteer in Laos for a couple of weeks to see if you think you'd like it? Never been to Laos though I know people who said it was their favourite place in SE Asia. I did live in china for 2 yrs though, and loved it!

Good luck with your decision - I'm sure you'll have an amazing experience whichever you choose

Eh to me it's a bit of a no brainer. Go to china. The deal they have given you in Laos sounds pretty bad and after a few months living without much money, food, even a working shower it will really start to get to you...especially living as a couple. That's obviously why they pay you back for your visa after a year 'cos most people will go mad after a few months and leave.

As fabulous said, go to China and teach english you could even do some private tuition on the side to save up some cash, then go back to Laos to travel and volunteer for a couple of months if you feel like it. Seriously a year in those conditions would drive a saint nuts.

It's a good predicament to be in, I wish I had those options.
