How does this sound for a 4 week placement in Tanzania???

Minimum contribution for the trip is £1995(28 days) excluding flights.

Day 1: Meet local representative at Kilimanjaro airport in the morning for travel to Uchira, which takes approximately 1 hour. Receive orientation and familiarisation and a tour of the village on arrival.

Days 2-7: Village experience visiting projects, learning about the cultural history of the Chagga and Pare peoples as well as the chance to visit our projects including taking a trip to the orphanage, visiting our social enterprise groups and seeing them at work. You will also have the chance to go on local excursions, including trips to Kirua Coffee farm, Miwaleni springs, Uchiras hand-hewn quarries and tunnels, nearby waterfall.

Days 8-10: Safari to local National Park with our partners.

Days 11-18: Spent helping out, dependent on your abilities and what most needs attention at the time of your stay, this is likely to include supporting volunteers teaching primary school children English in the mornings and working on the construction and painting of village buildings, gardening for the sustainable agriculture project in the afternoon in addition to helping out with the twice weekly adult English club.

Day 19-20: Rest/ shopping in Arusha/Moshi

Day 21-26: Kilimanjaro Trek with our partners.

Day 27: Final day in Uchira to spend as you wish.

Day 28: Travel to Kilimanjaro Airport for flights home.

It seems expensive- but part of what attracted me to this particular placement is the fact that it is run by a charity based out in Tanzania, so the money goes directly to the community, an it includes a Kilimanjaro trek, which I really want to do.

Anyway, thoughts welcome

Hi Nadiarb,

I have worked on a number of volunteering projects in Tanzania all based around improving primary education. I would suggest looking a little closer into the voluntary aspect of the trip and what this involves and where and how much of your money is going to the project. Do your research and ask lots of questions. If you want more advice why not visit:

Entrance fees for safari parks and to climb Kilimanjaro are extremely expensive in Tanzania so I am not suprised by the cost if these activities are included. Also check what route they plan to take you up as the Marangu route (coca cola) is best avoided if you want to get away from the crowds and rubbish.

Tanzania is a fantastic country with friendly people and awesome sights so I'm sure you will have a fantastic experience.
