Hello Everyone !

Basically, I can't stop thinking of volunteering in africa. I know there is alot of experienced people on here so I was hoping someone could give me advice and answer a few questions.

Here's what I have in my head at the moment,

I sort out how to finance my trip, sort work situation, apply then hopefully set off!!

If anyone can fill in the blanks that would be amazing and has anyone came across any restrictions in applying?

Look forward to hearing from some of you

Also, I'd like to get involved in building and conservation projects!

Thanks,

Stevie

You've not really asked any questions to answer, so tell us a bit more about your plans...

Where in Africa do you want to go? Your post title says South Africa, but you mention Ghana (West Africa) and Tanzania (East Africa).

How long do you want to spend volunteering? Do you want to travel around afterwards?

If you're interested in animal conservation, countries like Kenya and Tanzania are awesome, but so is South Africa. There are also some projects in Namibia that are highly regarded.

Community work like building can be done in many countries in Africa, and it would just be a case of searching around for some projects that take your fancy and going from there. Google is, as always, the best place to start.

I did teaching in Kenya for 3 months a few years ago and there were no restrictions on applying, but that very much depends on the company you go through. For example, VSO has requirements that need fulfilling for you to be involved.

If you choose to organise it through a company rather than directly with the projects it is usually more expensive because of admin costs, profit and so on. If you are nervous about travelling alone, then this is often the best thing to do, as you will have 24/7 support in-country. If you contact the project yourself and organise it directly with them, you know that your money goes to the project rather than lining the pockets of the CEO of a big company.

Just a couple of points. Organizing it direct isn't always cheaper, check yourafricanadventure.com

As for traveling on your own, make sure that you will be collected at the airport. Any reputable company will put your comfort/security top of the list.
