Doctor will only give me 3 months Pill!

PostPosted: Fri Sep 25, 2009 1:20 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

I am so annoyed!

I am going to Australia in a couple of weeks for a year, maybe even 2, so I went to my doctors the other day to ask for a year or more supply of the Pill (Microgynon). The nurse said it is their 'policy' to only issue 3 months supply of the pill at a time, so I would be lucky to get even 6 months supply.

She had a word with the Doctor and she has just phoned me now to say that the Dr will only give me 3 month supply which I think is ridiculous. I have spoken to so many people both on here and from when I went travelling the first time who seem to have had no problems getting a 12 month prescription - or at the very least 6 months!! I have been on this pill for the last couple years, had no problems with it, im healthy, blood pressure and weight etc is normal and healthy, yet the feckers still wont give me more than 3 months!

Can anyone offer any advice on how I can get more pills, ideally in the UK?!

If not, has anyone had to get another prescription over in Oz? How easy was it and how did you go about it?

Sorry for the rant, Im just so pissed off right now...

Hey thats so strange! My doc usually always gives me a 6 month supply (im in scotland possible different to where you're from). Anyways you could try telling them you've "lost" those packets they gave you, heard this one worked before. Also up here, we have a family planing clinic, sure you do too and you can get the pill from them for free too.
Im also pretty sure if you ask your doctor for a prescription you will definately get it in oz too.

Get yourself to a free NHS walk in centre. Its weird that your Dr will only give you 3 months, I manage to always get 6 months of my pill everytime I go to the Dr's without even asking and am sure they would give me 12 months. But when I moved to Spain for a year I had no problem getting a 12 month supply from the NHS walk in centre.

I had to have an appointment with the Dr there the first time I went but evey other time since I've just walked in and seen a nurse, so you'd best give them a call.

Yeah try going somewhere else, seeing someone else.
I got 12 months about 2 weeks ago (in England - so they do do it), and he was talking as if he would give me more even though they're only supposed to give a max of 12 months.
I'm sure you can get Microgynon in Oz though, if you can't get them.
I can't get my pill out there - it's relatively new here (about 3/4 years I think) and Oz seem to be a bit behind! My pill is Cerazette just incase anyone wants to know! Haha.
Good luck with getting some more - try a family planning clinic/seeing a different doc.

that is really weird! although my friend who i'm travelling with asked her travel nurse about it last time she went in and they said they would only do it by putting that she'd 'lost' her first three months so would prescribe her another 3 months which i thought was weird! i suppose it's at their discretion.
i'm seeing my doctor on monday so i'm going to ask then, hopefully it won't be a problem though!

i would recommend going to a family planning clinic if you have one nearby, i'm sure they'd help you out?

my girlfriend got some thing stuck in her arm which works in same way as the pill but lasts 2yrs.

might be a good idea looking into that as it saves carrying around a years supply of pills and you wouldn't need to worry about remembering to take the pill.

ooh just saw you're on cerazette too! that's what i'm on, i didn't realise it was fairly new? i love it because it stops my periods (it's one of the side effects) which will be very handy when travelling.

Thanks girls. My last doctors surgery used to give me 6 months too while I was in the UK, but this new surgery wont give anyone anymore than 3 months apparantly - surely they can bend the rules for somone going away for a year?!

Thanks Gemma, I might wander up to the Walk in Centre near my work. Will look for my nearest FPC too.

Do you think if I tell them that my doctor wont give me anymore than 3 months, it will cause problems? Or should I just make up an excuse that I have lost my pills or something...?

i would just be honest and tell them about your doctor, it really seems to vary from doctor to doctor i'm sure they'd understand!

Thanks Sarah It's just such a farce, especially when the girls I am travelling with have been able to get 12 month prescriptions ok. Ah well, I would rather get the Pills over here than mess about with Doctors and having to pay for them over there...

Just double check what the reason is.
Microgynon seems to be funny with some people. It can cause strokes/high blood pressure/migraines, that sort of thing, in a lot of people, so maybe they won't give that much Microgynon out?
Or just double check there aren't other health reasons they're doing it, specifically to you!
Don't want to keep taking it if it could do you damage!
See if you can change pills if this is the case - they may give more out of different types.
Or yeah, I'm thinking about the implant too. I have 14 months worth to take with me on this trip. Hopefully though I will be travelling for longer than that. If I can't get Cerazette in Oz, I'm probably going to look in to the implant.
But I love not having periods on my pill!
I have been on a pill for about 5 years though, so by that point it would probably be good for me to have a break eeek!

i know! it doesn't seem fair that some girls have no trouble getting what they need and others are refused it they should have one rule for the whole system instead of allowing the doctor to decide whatever they want - especially if you have no health issues for them to be concerned about.

i think you'll have more luck at a FPC though, in my experience they're a lot more helpful and accomodating with things like this than a regular GP as they specialise in it. good luck!

I'm on microgynon and get 6 months supply every time I go, as standard.... Then for the next 6 months worth i just ask for a repeat prescription, don't even have to go see them.

Nope, I am fine and dandy! Never had any problems, blood pressure, weight, everything is absolutley fine, never had any side effects etc, so there is no reason as to why they cant give me at least 6 months - my old doctors gave me 6 months at a time, its just my new doctors whose 'policy' it is to only supply 3 months at a time to all ladies, not just me... Grr... I'll figure it out. Pain. In. The. Arse.

Thanks girls
