Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows of any good Prepaid mastercards or visacards where you can exchange Euros to Dollars for use in South America, with a free atm fee. I have checked the places im going to see if they have Atms for both cards and they seem to be pretty accessable in all the larger South American Towns and Cities.
Would much rather take a card then have all my cash on me

Hiya. Have a look at the caxton fm cards. Seems to be a good one going- also Nationwide normal bank card seem to chanrge very low as well.

I'm taking the caxton fx one with me and possibly tranfering money from Nationwide to that card.

Good luck x

Hi, I have got a prepaid mastercard with tuxedo. It's ideal for travelling, I got that just last month and it's so easy cos I can topup however much I wanted too put on it. I have paid my visa and am paying for my air flights with it next year.

I'd have a look at that first, I have seen over 15 different prepaid cards including the caxton one.

Goodluck, Trisha

I went for the tuxedo over the caxton. After 3 days of debating to myself I decided on getting the mastercard tuxedo. The fees have been excellant so far for the spending on the importance. Like the visa I was approved for within 3 days :-D

I am now in a debate to see if it's possible to put at least £2500 onto that card so I can put that into the nz kiwi bank account.

I didn't want the constantly monthly charge for a card, etc. So tuxedo was my best thing!

I just got a FairFX card, according to the money saving expert its the cheapest one: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money#prepaid

It charges a 1.50euro/ $2 cash withdrawl fee, but gives a better rate than the Caxton card (apparently)

All these pre-paid cards will charge you either directly or indirectly through the exchange rate. If you can only get a cash card and are concerned/can't get a commission free credit card then they can be a good option for internet/phone payments, but the Nationwide account definitely offers the cheapest option.

Also, it is better to take money straight from you Nationwide account than transfer it onto one of these cards, or into an foreign (NZ or Aussie) bank account. Use your Nationwide account for your savings at the foreign account for your earnings while away. Nationwide is either free to withdraw from or passes on the charge Visa charges them, no one else will beat it (they only offer it because they hope in future you will give them more business).

I got nationwide cash card, but to have my wages paid I need a new zealand bank account. So I have 2 banks in mind of who to go with at the moment. About transferring the savings to that nz bank cheaply I am still finding the best way. I am hoping that nationwide can provide that cheaper option for me, which at the moment I have asked.

Why do you want to transfer saving to an NZ bank account? You can withdraw your savings firectly from an ATM for free while in NZ and at a very good exchange rate, using your cash card. This also helps to see how much you're managing to live off your earning or rely on your savings. Don't bother paying to transfer your savings.

Do you think the exchange rates will still be good thou next year in June? Plus also do they charge at the atm cash machines or the hole in the walls one?

I will still now open a bank account with new zealand but have the confidence that I still have my savings I worked hard for to save up this working holiday next year on my cash card in nationwide. Thank You M.garratt!

Just everyone on facebook groups and forums were doing transfers into nz banks, so I was concerned i couldn't be able to do that transfer.

But you now gave me hope and reassurance, thank you!

I can now easily not freak out about getting the savings into a new zealand account. I was worried that I couldn't get access to my savings in new zealand or australia whilst I was travelling and working with a cash card.

Trisha xx

No worries, you shouldn't have any problems accessing your money using your Nationwide cashcard. An ATM is a 'hole in the wall' cash machine; do you mean bank ATM's rather than those dodgy freestanding ones? If that's what you mean, then yes they are more likely to work with bank ATM's and I always look for a reputable looking bank while I'm away as you never know if those dodgy ones are just a fake machine which will clone your card.

Who knows what might happen to the exchange rate, generally you just have to hope for the best and work with the rate at the time you're there. Rates are very poor at the moment if you're earning pounds sterling so hopefully they will improve by next year. What I meant is that the rate you'll get from Nationwide is very good compared with using travellers cheques or one of these pre-paid cards.
