hi all,

any ideas on the cheapest possible way to travel around SE Asia???
My plan is bangkok - cambodia - vietnam - loas - thailand Or the opposite way (which is best???) then onto malaysia.

hav been looking at STA travel's route (£869 travel and accomodation 30 days), but i always think they're a bit of a rip off.

am also thinking of getting a flight from singapore - bali, is it best to book this once im away??

any help and advice welcome

thanks x

Im same as you, i dont know weather to book the sta trip or find another way.

I think it would be better to g on your own cos you can stay in the places that you like for longer and dont have to stick to an itinery

I wouldnt bother with the sta trip, just do it on you own. Thats what im doing. It will be so much cheap and you've got so much more flexibilty.

Agree with Leo and Darren, reckon you do it yourself as its half the fun!

Im doing it the other way;Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand but it doesnt really matter..If you want to do it by land then end up in Thailand last so you can get to Singapore..otherwise you can catch a cheap Air Asia flight from pretty much anywhere (maybe not direct but defo. via K.Lumpur)

I wouldnt use planes to get around tho. Trains most of the way or buses perhaps for shorter legs where the service is decent

Cheers
Dave

PS When do you go? Im there end of Jan so can let you know how I get on if you are going after?

I agree, it really is pretty easy to arrange things yourself. I'm not saying you won't have some testing moments, as you probably will, but that's also half the fun. SE Asia is largely a Buddhist area and people are generally friendly and helpful. I know is daunting when you're planning and have little/no experience of travelling or foreign coutries, but once you get into the swing of things it really is pretty straightforward and you relax into taking things as they come. When you're travelling, there's no big hurries of worries, you can just go with the flow.

Hi for a simple route i would do it yourself. But if you want something more complex maybe use STA. I have used STA for all my trips in the last 5 years and can't fault them. They are cheap and helpful. Plus then let you put a deposit down for dates etc. You can alwasy chnage your flights with them as well they aren't permanent fixtures. When i first wne ti booked all flights then as i went along if i chnaged my mind i paid the $50 fee for changing the dates and it was easy as that. Although if your not worried about prices and fluctuations of cheap flights/expensive flights and have time i guess you can book one at a time and go that way! STA is easy for first timers but it's up to you cheers

thanks everybody!!

think train and bus is probably the best option for travelling around SE asia, and hopefully that will save me some cash as im guna be on a tight budget!! I might also have a little look into air asia as well.

it is all a bit daunting but i cant wait for it now! think things will defos fall into place once i get cracking!

I've got my flights all booked (leaving april 16th) doing a month in Japan first, then onto bankok and SE asia etc but yeh Dave let me know how your travelling goes and any tips!
