Laptop whilst living abroad and then travelling? Taking two bags?

Hi everyone,

So I've already searched for similar posts on here that might answer my question but they haven't really hit the nail on the head! I'm hoping to do Bunac's work Canada programme earlyish next year (Feb/March). I'll start off by staying in one of the major cities over there for maybe 5/6 months in rented accommodation whilst I work. After this, I plan on travelling around Canada and maybe going down into America...

My big question is shall I bring my laptop? I'm a keen photographer and feel like without my laptop, I'd be pretty stuck. I also think it'd be great to watch films on/keep in touch. Living in one place for 5/6 months, I can't imagine no TV/no films (i love films!) I know people have said on here that people travel to get away from all of that but for me, that's not really why I am travelling.. So..has anyone been in a similar situation - staying in one place for quite a long time and then planned to go travelling? What did you do with your laptop if you took one? I don't really feel like I'd need my laptop when I was travelling.. (but ofcourse I'd take my external hard drive to upload photos)...

I'm also wondering about bags..as I've never been away on my own before I'm feeling pretty daunted by all the decisions and I really don't want to make the wrong choices! I don't think I could just take one backpack for 10 or so months, (actually, it's out of the question!!) especially as i'll be staying in one place for half that amount of time..so what did you guys do with your extra bag when you took it away? I've already thought about putting it in storage or if I met someone I could trust, I could always keep it at theirs (but obviously that's depending on that..)

Ok so I'll stop rambling now! If anyone can offer any advice, I'd really appreciate it! Thank you

Sarah

What type of laptop do you have? Personally I found the standard more bulky laptops a huge hassle when travelling, though if you're staying in one place for a while it could be fine.

I'd recommend getting a netbook - they're very light, great for watching films on the move, can use wireless, and have ample space for photos etc.

Hiya, a lot of people off these boards take their laptio with them, just make sure you get good insurance to cover it. I recomend notebooks, light and compact - perfect to travel with.

Ive not heard of anyone taking 2 bags, infact im not sure how you oculd get 2 bags? Firstly you cant possibly carry 2 backpacks can you? Secondly you will be charged a lot for this. Most people go with backpacks, take what they need, buy extra there, send stuff home. If not i suggest you bring a suitcase, but this doesnt suit well for travelling around.

I went went bunac to canada in 2005 and aircanada let me take two bags with no extra charge. A lot of people i was flying with took two. It worked for me because I only lived in T.O for 4 months, with only a brief sojourn to montreal during which i only took my backpack. But getting public transport all the way back to the airport on the way home dragging over half my body weight was NOT. FUN.
So if you plan to travel a lot two bags is out of the question, maybe if you really need lots of stuff, just take a very large suitcase?

I've learnt a lot since then anyway, happy with my 65l for a year in Oz :P

hey, yeah i was thinking of buying a notebook - especially as my current laptop is on it's last legs!

i was planning on taking a big suitcase and then a backpack as hand luggage (i've got away with it before...?)

Goosejuggler, what did you do with your suitcase when you were away in montreal?

So many decisions!
