Don't book them all before you go. You'll be restricted to where you can go/when. If you love a place you may want to stay a couple of extra days - you won't be able to if you book them before.

You can just turn up and find them. You can use your guidebook to hunt out the ones you want.

Or, I tend to book somewhere a day or two before I get there. I just like to have somewhere to head to when I arrive, rather than wandering round aimlessly for ages looking for somewhere to stay.

You can do this by calling them from the numbers in your guidebook, search the internet for hostels in the town, or I use a website called hostelbookers.com - they basically list loads of hostels in the town, reviews, descriptions, ratings, pictures and directions from airports/train/bus stations etc. You pay a 10% deposit if you book online (taken off the nightly rate).
Or you could just get the details from that website and then call them yourself - you won't have to pay a deposit over the phone, but usually have to leave a credit/debit card number incase you don't turn up.
Another one is www.hostelworld.com - exactly the same thing. I tend to use hostelbookers just because its the one I've always used!

Have a look at them before you go and see what you think/how they work.
Maybe you could book the accomodation for when you arrive now. Then leave all the rest until you know where you're going to be going/when.

If you're going somewhere like Thailand for a full moon party, or Sydney for xmas and NY/something similar, you will obviously have to book further in advance.
