 Credit Card

PostPosted: Wed Sep 9, 2009 4:06 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hi
I am going travelling for year this November to various countries and worried about my credit card as I have a £1k limit in and owe the bank a few hundreds which I will clear over the next couple of weeks. I will be putting in about £3k in there to support me during my travels as long with other means of funds.

I have tried to do a balance transfer to another provider but got rejected, probably I pay the minumum every month and havent been workign the last 6 months. Should I just stick to my current credit card and put some cash in?
Also worried I will lose it out there and havent got a spare card to keep me going??

Tips/advice greatly appreciated xx

I'm confused. You are better off putting your travel savings in a bank account and keeping your credit card for emergencies. The Nationwide Flex Account offers by far the best option for accessing your saving (charging no commission or fees on it's cash card and 0.84% on it's debit card). I'd agree that clearing your debt is a good idea. Your £1000 credit limit isn't great if you have to pay for medical bills but should be fine for most emergency uses. I wouldn't plan to use your credit card to help fund your trip.

Hiya
as posted above do not use your credit card unless it is for emergencys (booking flights whatever?) Also ring up your credit card company and see if they can increase your limit, worth a try!

If its secuirty reasons you anted to use your credit card for, try and get a pre paid credit card - FairFX or Caxton seem to be pretty good, so look them up.

Also try and get a nationwide cash card, these seem to be all they are givingout and being told you need to be with them 6 months before you can apply for an upgrade to a debit account.

Do you reckon its best to not tell them you are going traveling?

They wont increase my limit so pretty much stuck with £1k limit. I have managed to clear it off today. I got 2 debit cards which I can put more credit in and they both have overdraft facility on them so will have to take those with me.

I go in November so cant apply for nationwide if i need to be with them for 6 months before applying?!

Soooo stressed at the mo, I am moving out of my home and into my mums and having moved 4 times over last 18 months, I can see why other credit card companies have declined my application!

You can almost certainly get a Nationwide cashcard straight away. It's the Visa Debit card they're more reluctant to give to people. The cashcard will allow you to make free withdrawals from ATMs (cash machines), which will save you a fortune (most others charge 2.75% and minimum 1.50-£2.50, which soon adds up). Then you only need to use another card for card payments, which you don't need to do often as you're on a tight budget and not earning anything, normally only online transactions and the odd large purchase like internal flights.

Never ever travel with just one card!!!
I work for a bank and the amount of people we get calling in because they have lost their cards and are now stuffed as they have no money is unbelieveable.

It may sound OTT but i would recommend travelling with at the LEAST 3 cards all from seperate banks. Only take 1 credit card and take several debit cards!!!

I'll be taking about 5 haha.

Why only 1 credit card? Credit cards can be used just like a debit card in an emergency, except they'll let you spend more money than you have and you can get a cash advance over the counter inside most banks around the world.

I've always travelled with 2 debit cards (for different bank accounts) and 2 credit cards. While travelling RTW I also had travellers cheques and dollars cash for emergencies, but now I just take a bit of pounds sterling cash.

The thought of having one credit card scares me haha i know as long as you safe and sensible with your cash its bascially the same as a debit but with interest.

I'll only be taking the one just to make sure i dont go spending more then i have
