Hi guys,

I'm off travelling for 4-5 months in Feb 2010 depending how long the money lasts. After ive paid for the 2 months voluntary project im going on flight etc im going to be left with around 3K if i save the 6K i'm hoping to by that time.

I'm travelling to Africa for 2 months where accomadation and most food is included in the project i am doing, then on to Oz with a working visa for 1.5/2 months to work if poss, then NZ for month - 2 weeks then on Thailand for 2 weeks.

Obviously exact times i will be in places will depend on how long fund last/ if i can get work in Oz which i hear is tough at the moment.

Is this enough money for this amount of time? As you can tell guys im fretting a little bit.

I've been working for the past year part time whilst finishing college but am now struggling to get full time work am hoping i will get some christmas work to get the extra funds i need.

Any tips or advice or just some reassurance would be lovely

Sounds like you would probably need to get a job. I don't know from personal experience, but its generally said that without work you should bugdet around £1k a month for Oz and NZ. So including Africa and Thailand it might be a bit tight. Depends how easily you could get a job i suppose

Yeah i thought as much to be fair. I'm hoping to get full time work for my last few months in UK but im sure as you can imagine its pretty tough at the moment hoping to pick up some Christmas work cos my part time hours are cutting it.

Yeah ive heard 1K a month in OZ and NZ.

I've got a working permit for OZ and ive got this thing called work and fun down under with real gap which signs you up to job agencies so fingers crossed. But yes my mate went out there to work and it took him ages to find work but im on a bit of a time schedule what with money and getting back for Uni.

Thanks for the advice tho appreciate it

Hi Nat

I really think if you want to use your WHV you might want to stay longer in oz to work and then to travel, with working your not going to see much of oz and therefor wasted your WHV, you only get one ever in your life unless you do 88days of specified work(find this on the oz government website).

What project are you doing that will cost you £3k for voluntary work in africa, food and accom included wouldnt come anywhere near this for Africa?

Also with the work and fun down under programme, they wont GET you a job all they do is give you a couple of websites to look at it, give you tips on how to get jobs and go through getting a TFN and bank account number all which you can buy youself for a lot less money. I knew a fair few people who have done this programme and have all been deeply disappointed.

I dont want to put you off in anyway as your trip seems like fun, id suggest you save as much as you possibly can, possibly look into orgganisng your own voluntary programme by going direct to voluntary schemes in africa themselves and not through an agency, which i have a feeling your going to tell me is RealGap.
Id look into spending more time in australia where you work for a good few months save and then travel and see the sights - your not going to see much if your working and you only have 2 months max.Work for say 3-4 months then go travelling, after all you have a year on the WHV visa. If you decide you can survive without work, i would definately cancel that WHV now so you can apply for another WHV later on in the future if you decide you wish to go back there to travel around more.
Also thailand is meant to be amazing ahd friends gon travelling there and said it is brilliant, i thik to explore thailand you would need at least a month, and it is very cheap so you should manage (giving how much cash you have left that is.)

*edit: just read youro ther post, you can sign yourself upto job agency companies you do not need a company to do this for you, all very easy.

My best advice, is to think about all these options, research into these things you have signed up with and work your Ass off.
