 Budget for 8 months?

Hello, it's my first post here, so here goes!

I'm planning my gap year starting in May 2010, got alot of things planned, but trying to figure out how much cash i'll need! I already have $7000 AUD (that's about 3500 quid) but i know i'll need much much more. Some things I know what it will cost, others i don't. I'm traveling alone for some of it. Ok, here's the plan from start to end.

6 week Intrepid trip, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam - $3000 AUD plus meals and spending money, flight to Bangkok $450 AUD

6 weeks in the UK - i have family there, so hopefully 4 weeks of that will be staying with family, so much cheaper. Planning on doing a couple of short trips to Scotland, Ireland, Wales?

France - 3 weeks in Paris, renting a cheap apartment, might be sharing with a friend or cousin, then 3 weeks around the countryside with a friend, she's au pairing in Bordeaux, i think i can stay with her for a little while if need be.

Germany - 1 week, for Oktoberfest and seeing Berlin

Italy - 2 or 3 weeks ideally, the countryside and coast as well as major cities

Greece - Athens and Greek Isles, preferably a tour or the islands, 1 week

Spain - 1 week to Barcelona and Madrid

Russia - Again, Intrepid tour (have traveled with them in the past, were incredible, and have been recommended to go with a group to Russia rather than on my own) $2000 AUD plus meals and spending money - 1 to 2 weeks

Guatemala - Volunteering with Casa Sito in Antigua (been with them before) $500 AUD for 2 months accommodation, plus meals and spending money, will be with a friend

Belize - Caye Caulker (the most amazing island ever) for a relaxing break, hopefully with the boyfriend, 2 weeks, hopefully over new years

I'll be staying in hostels mostly, with the occasional nicer hotel, traveling by bus and train where possibly, eating relatively cheaply (and i don't eat much) and only going out 2 or 3 times a week. Also will have a balance of more touristy things and just exploring towns.

Any advice or indication on budget would be wonderful, and sorry for such a long post.

hi Michelle

Your plans sound good!

I'm in London so can help you with costs for here! Most hostels are around £20 a night is what I have been told from back packer friends and most people coming from Aus find the UK quite expensive (especially London). It all depends what you want to do. There is plently of free stuff in London (art galleries, some museams, parks, visiting markets like Covent Garden, some of the sights like Big Ben, tower bridge, outside of buckingham palace) but lots of touristy stuff is pricey as you'd expect! Theatre tickets start at around £15 but can go up to £50, London Eye is about £15, madame tussauds around £22,

I back packed in Italy in summer 03 so costs may have changed since then but I spend around £900 for 3 weeks including flights and getting the boat to Ischia, one of the islands from the mainlands, which was well worth the trip. I travelled on slowest/cheapest trains, stayed in hostels, (including a fantatic one in rome called yellow hostel - check it out) but ate our main meal out most days - the food is so good in Italy, its one place where I think you really have to enjoy it.

Out of interest, which intrepid trip are you looking to do in asia. I am looking to do the same countries as you, but there seem to be so many for those countries I can make up my mind! I did an intrepid trip a few years ago and really rated it.

Hope this info helps.

Hi Gronya,

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking at doing the 40 day Indochina Encompassed trip with Intrepid. it was the longer of the two trips that visited those four countries together. The rest seemed to go further to China or other countries i wasn't so keen on visiting at this point.

I think that's a good idea, to only eat one meal out per day. It's so cheap to just buy some bread and cheese and fruit and have a bit of a picnic, or in Asia eat some street food, which is always great value.
