I can't make these kinds of decisions!!!!!! help?

ok, so ive got to make some pretty big decisions pretty fast, and im really not sure what to do! im planning to go travelling in 2011 for a year, after working for just over a year between now and then.

However, ive just got back from being in america for four months, and i have a grand debt to pay off from that.

I cannot currently get a job, not for a lack of trying.

My target of saving 10-12k in a year is looking a little bit silly....

I dont know what to do!! should i postpone travel for a year, do my year of further study (ive already got a degree) and meanwhile also earn a bit more money....

should i postpone travelling for like a few months to save a bit more money, although this would mean not seeing some things i want to see whilst travelling because of time of year etc...

or should i go with whatever i earn, get as far as it will take me and maybe have to come home early....

OR...should i earn what i can, and take out a loan for the rest?

has anyone taken out loans for travelling? is it pretty easy to do or is it a really really bad idea?

sorry for the epic message, any advice anyone has got would be awesome!! thanks

the money target isnt silly if you put ur mind to it, I have saved £10K in 9 months.

Personally i would advise against a loan but that because i believe if you cant afford it dont buy it? Mortgage is the only exception to my rule. But thats just me!

thanks, 10k in 9 months gives me hope!! its not that i think i cant do it, im totally committed to saving pretty much everything i earn (i dont have any responsibilites really), its just its proving harder to find a job, and i mean any job, than i thought!! and if i dont find a job soon, i wont have physically enough time to earn enough to save enough, if you get what i mean!!

Heey

Well if it was me:

Id stick with trying to get a job doing anything and possibly having a 2nd job if option is there and id pay off your debt straight away and then concentrate on saving for your trip, and if you have to postpone your trip in order to have the amount of savings you wanted then so be it few months is nothing!!

Then once your back id prob do the further study you mentioned, and then get into your chosen career field if you so wish or go away on another trip!!

thanks, i think ive decided what im going to do now! think i will keep trying to get any job going, then save as much as i can, go in 2011 like i was planning, and if i dont manage to save as much as i hoped ill just go for like 7-8 months instead of a year, come back and study, then go again!! lol, i think sometimes you just have to write your options down to get it straight in your head ya know!? x

Hi there, i know u seem to have made up your mind but im in the same boat as u! Well the difference is i have a full time job except i am renting with a mate so cant afford to save as much as id like... But im gonna try my best as i really want to set off in Jan 2011. If the worst comes to the worst i may have to move back home for a while eeeekkK! Will be worth it though right!? Hope u find a job soon

P.S Does anybody have a rough idea of how much spending money would be needed for a year of travelling? And maybe working a bit in between?

a year travelling would really depend on where your going? what you intend to do? I'd say £10K for a years travelling around!

£10K would be about right then - tours are not cheap and the only cheap place your going to is Asia.

La & New York id say including transport would prob be about £1.5-£3K depending how you go about money.

Aus is quite expensive they say average about £1K-£1.5K a month then you have whatever activites etc you want to do?

NZ is about the same as oz.

You could prob travel and stay in Asia for a good few months on £3K id have though!! Im just going by what others have told me they have spent in these places.

You need to think of:

Accommodation
Travel
Food
Drink
Activities

Oh no i have ALOT of saving to do so! lol! I realise America will be expensive so maybe i will do just one week in LA and one week in New York to see the major sights (ive been to NY once before). Hopefully i will get some form of work in australia which will help me along... I hope to pay for flights , tours and accomodation before i set off so the money i bring is for general spending but i will see how that goes. Maybe i should spend more time in asia then if its cheaper!!Thanks a mill for the info

I went to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia last summer for a month and including flights I spent around £900. Flights were £450, I think it can be as cheap as you like within reason of course.

900 quid is comforting!! im planning on going away for about 8 months i think, and im going on the grand a month rule, however im spending most of time in asian countries, the only expensive places being europe and parts of china! so im budgetting for 7k, i think i need a min of 6 but id like 7 so i can do what i like! and if i can save 8 by the time i go then great!! hope that helps
