www.eslcafe.com

You'll find everything you need to know on there.

I'm in the exact same position as you. Really want to teach abroad but dropped out of uni to travel. Most countries do require a degree to teach combined with a TEFL course but there are always ways around it. I have friends teaching in Korea just now and one of them doesn't have a degree. He's been there for almost two years now and all of them work "illegally". Those with degrees initially applied through agencies but very quickly worked out that the agencies were scamming them.

Apparently the best thing to do is to get your Tefl qualification, then just go out on your own and apply for jobs when you are there. Obviously, you will need some funds to survive off of, as there is no guarantee as to how quickly you will find paid employment.

China and Indonesia are also meant to be good places to head without a degree. Eastern Europe is another option but you won't earn as much money as you tend to get paid local wages.

The problem I have found is that on most forums people have really conflicting views on the rules and regulations. One guy will say you don't need a degree, the next will say that it's essential. I think I'm just going to head out and see what happens. If i don't find work then I'll travel for a bit and come home. If I do get a job, then it's a bonus.

hi brendan thx so much for the info, its made me feel alot better that it is still possible to get work without a degree, i dont suppose you know whats the worst that can happen if you are found to be working illegally, can they throw you in prison? or are you just asked to leave the country asap.

Hi,

With Asian countries a degree is not normally considered as essential, they simply want people to teach English. However, in some places they will require you to have completed face-toface teaching practice as opposed to simply taking an online course. I took a 120hour course with this company and found it really good www.onlinetefl.com. I think it would also suit your situation as you could complete the 20 hour weekend course and then go straight out there and complete the online part as you go. I would advise however, for you to apply to some teaching positions before you go; because of the current situation in Europe, the market is becoming slightly more saturated as more people choose to travel and teach abroad. The company I mentioned however, can also help you with this and give you a list of schools. Or actually I've just remembered seeing a new course they are running on their site which is a paid teaching internship based in China- you take a course before you go and then teach in China for 5 months (everything included; accommodation etc)- could be another good option for you as then you will have experience of teaching in Asia to use when applying for other positions.

Hope that helps and good luck!

degree is not a must if you teach English in China, but,it depends on the school.
For junior college or some college, it is more important for the schoole has a foreign teacher for English teaching to get more attentions of the parents.
Once you have good relationship with the schoole, then nobody care whether you have a degree.

It is a good chance for Foreign Teachers: more and more parents want their kids can learn or enhance English during Summer /Winter holiday. It is easy to find a job in a English Campain (sth like this) or Summer/Winter English trainning class. No degree is needed but your should ensure your spoken English is really good.

I have no idea how long you can stay in China for one visa.

Going to China and looking for a teaching job without a degree does limit your options. It is a requirement to have a degree if you want to teach, and it is very difficult to get a visa without one. However there are options! Check out www.getzouing.com for Gap years in Dalian China, that allow you to learn Kungfu, Chinese, traditional painting and more on your placements. Teaching English gives you an apartment rent free and about 4000-5000RMB a month (more than enough to cover living expences, activity costs and a little extra for travel). Bonus paid at the end of the year.

If you want more info email me (matt@getzouing.com).
