Hello,
so this summer just gone i spent the best couple of months working in a summer camp. I so want to go back next summer as the start of a gap year. I plan on visiting australia afterwards, get a working holiday visa and spend most of my time in sydney (i have a friend who lives there and it would be awesome to visit her).
my question is would i be able to get the j1 visa that i need for summer camp and the working holiday visa for australia before i leave? or would i need to get the australian visa once i get there? i would be going to usa about 2 months before i head to oz.
if anyone has done anything similar could you please let me know what you did, would be very much appreciated!!!!
thanks in advance
You can't apply for the Australian Working Holiday Visa from within Australia. You can apply for it from anywhere in the world outside of Australia, though.
The good news is that once you've applied for your Australia WHV, you've got 12 months in which to travel to Australia and activate it. From the point of activation (i.e. when you enter Australia), you'll then be allowed to stay in Australia for 365 days. You can leave and re-enter as often as you like during this period, but bear in mind of you do leave at any time (i.e. if you nip over to, say, NZ for 10 days) the clock keeps ticking down on your 365 days. It won't stop counting and then re-start once you re-enter Australia.
If you fail to make it to Australia within a year of applying for your WHV, then it will expire and you'll need to apply again and pay the fee again if you still want to go.
Basically, just apply for the Aussie WHV a decent period before you intend on arriving there, but not more than a year in advance and you'll be fine.
