Hi everyone,

Been thinking about going travelling on my own to Australia & New Zealand. I want to turn my dream into reality but not really sure where to start! I'm aware that planning a trip like this will take time and that I'll have to do a lot of research.

I'd be very grateful if anyone who's been there and done it (or someone who's planning their trip at the moment!) could give me some basic step by step advice on how to proceed.

I've been told that STA travel is a good place to go for a starting point - do others agree?

I'd be eternally grateful to anyone who could give me some much needed advice! Thanks in advance
Helena xx

Hi Helena,

I'm going to Oz in January and only started planning a month ago so don't think that you need ages (unless you need a while to save some money).

First thing I did was book on OzIntro... if you've not heard of them I definitely advise looking it up. It's basically a weeks introduction to Sydney, accommodation, activities and a chance to meet other people travelling alone. They sort out your visa for you as well if you want them to.

Next thing I did was book my flights (through STA Travel but have a look around). OzIntro recommend RealTraveller and you could also try Quantas or Roundtheworldflights.com depending on what sort of ticket you want.

Since then all I've done is look up loads of stuff on this site!! I'm trying to get my insurance sorted at the moment but haven't got further than talking about it yet.

I bought my backpack from gapyeartravelstore and had a practice pack today.

Most important things to do are:
Visa
Flights
Insurance

OzIntro or other organised group if you want that for the first week. Another site I looked into was Bunac but I don't know anymore I'm afraid.

Hope that helps x

You probably only need to be really organised if you've not got a long time (like a month or something) to see everything you want to see. There's loads of posts about budgets and so on, so you can see how much you might need to save up before you go. I don't know what the situation is with visas, in what situations you might need one. I haven't looked into that yet myself.

Otherwise, work out how long you need to save up the money you need, sort out your visa, book a flight, book a few nights accommodation to get you started, and then go?!
