What are you studying? What kind of work do you want to do? Have you any work experience?
I think the big problem you will face if you want a 'proper job' is that your Australian qualifications won't be easily recognised by employers. One option to help overcome this is to use the UK NARIC service which for a fee will authenticate your qualifications at a comparative level to UK qualifications. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how employers view this as it's mainly used for foreign students to prove they meet the pre-requisites for further study.
I'm not sure how you can effectively apply for work from Australia. Maybe some Australians who have visited the UK could provide some advice on this.
Monster.co.uk seems a popular website for some career paths. There's loads more websites out their too and even more employment consultants/agencies. My advice with agencies is to choose three or four that seem competent and work with them. Keep in regular contact with the consultants and ask them for advice about how you can increase your chances. Ask them to be frank and tell you if there's any glaring problems. Always remember, you are not the client, the employer is. They don't owe you a job and don't need to you find work, they're there to find the best people for the employers needs.
If it's bar work you're after then you could check out their websites (Walkabout bars are full of Australian staff), but better still is to visit as many bars and pubs as possible (once in London obviously). Dress reasonably smartly, get some good CV's printed off and go in there and be confident and friendly. Always remember to SMILE . |
