 Paris hostels & couchsurfing

Hi there!
I might be going to Paris very soon (within the next couple of weeks), and then visiting some other places round Europe.
I was looking for cheap, under £25, hostels in the city, and wondered if anyone had recommendations? I had a look round the internet, but I'd really prefer to stay somewhere with 'character', not a brand new, huge modern building.

Also, does anyone have opinions about couch surfing? What's it like? How safe? Anything else you could tell me about it?

Any thoughts/opinions on either of those topics would be great!

In Paris there is hostel called the 'young and happy' hostel on rue moufftard not too far from the notre dame and in the bar and young person area. There is no curfew which I found with other places and I met a hell of a lot of great people. I would advise shared accommodation as its cheaper and you meet tons of people, though you can get double bed rooms. It costs about 20-26 euro a night. Hope this helps. I loved it! x
