Hey Guys,

Me and my friend are going backpacking four about 2 and a half weeks around greece in september, but we are kinda stuck as to where to go, what with there being soo many islands!

Anyone have a rough itinerary that we can build upon

Cheers!

I island hopped for about 5 wks in the summer of 2007. Had a ball. Flew into Athens, spent one night there and did all the sights. Pireas is the name of where the port is in Athens, ferries are generally early morning 7.30ish, be there 1 hour before etc.Got the ferry to Paros. Loved it. Spent about a wk there.
Then got a ferry to Ios...there was a heatwave at the time and it was really really hard to do anything except lay in the water. Spent about 3 nights there.

Got ferry to Santorini (my favourite!)..spent nearly 2 wks here. Got ferry back to Paros again for a few days and then onto Naxos for a few days. From there, got an overnight ferry all the way up to Thessaloniki to visit a Greek friend for 3 or 4 days. Got a ferry from there to Mykonos (which was too crowded i thought- it was in Aug). That was our last stop. Was able to catch a flight home from there.

Accommodation is really easy to find as once u get off the ferry, people will be waiting to take you to their guesthouse/hotel. They're usually reasonable enough. I did find it handy to have a hotel in Athens booked though for the first night
Enjoy! it's a great holiday. V relaxing

I'll second Santorini! Went there in 2007, such a beautiful place! The north of the island is the most interesting, the south is very very quiet but i guess it depends what you like! Amazing sunsets and scenery in the north.
Santorini isn't renowned for it's beaches though - they're full of pebbles! x

Last year I did a cruise with easycruise (they are the same company as easyjet)
This cruise was absolutely amazing and wonderfully cheap.

There was me and my 3 other friends in one tiny room (which helped lower the cost), we got breakfast and then lunch or dinner for 7 days all for $260 Canadian!

The cruise was really great because you stop mainly mid morning and then don't have to be back on the boat until 4am mainly. This was great because we were never worried about getting back to the boat. We got to enjoy the island to its full extent!

The cruise is nothing fancy but it doesnt have to be because you are spending most of your time off the boat and enjoying the island.

I did the Greek islands last year. Mykonos, Ios and Santorina and had an amazing time. Have also been to Zante (Zakinthos) and Corfu and those are also nice. I would definately go for the first 3. You will have a great time.

I am planning to do some island hopping in Summer of 2011 (savings hit after having to buy a new car so postponed from 2010). I'll probably be spending about 2 weeks on strict budget.

How many islands realistically should I be able to visit? I was initially planning about 5, but now looking into possibility of staying in Athens as well.

Santorini was one of my list, along with Thessaloniki and possibily Zante, Lefkas and Kefalonia.
