 Inter-railing vs. Driving - Help!

PostPosted: Mon Jul 6, 2009 11:22 am Reply to Message Reply with quote

I have just begun thinking about a gap year before I do a MA at Uni, and I want to do a trip around Europe. Countries I want to visit include: Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Romania, Hungary, and maybe some of Austria or Germany. If you look at a map you can kind of vaguely see the route I want to go from the countries I've listed. Thing is... do I go by rail or do I drive? What's best? If I Inter-rail then I'll be staying in hostels, if I drive then I can bring a tent. Which is easier/cheaper? And what about if my car breaks down in the middle of no-where? And are there camp sites in those countries? Also, does anyone know about ferries from the UK to Denmark or between Denmark and Norway/Sweden?

Also, I'm a total n00b. Where does one purchase an inter-rail pass and how long do they last?

I know that's a lot of questions but basically if anyone has any answers whatsoever it would be very much appreciated!

Hey,

Sounds like quite a trip. Personnally i'd go inter-railling, much less stressful (and i love driving!!). I bought an inter rail pass and it was as simple as you can get and very good value for money. Have a look here: http://www.internationalrail.com/default.asp for prices etc - check to see if you come under the "youth" banner as i did, saved a few quid. On the site it'll show you all of the price brackets available and which countries are covered.

To get from UK to Norway there is an over night ferry run by Fjord Line - DFDS used to run but not any more, from Newcastle. Also a company may (don't know tho) sail from Hull. There are a few roads and rail way lines running from Scandinavia to Denmark so try and ignore all the water that's in the way lol!

Defo Hostelling, camping is fun when there's a canny gang of you, but esp if the weather is less than favourable can you really be chewed with putting a tent up every night? Yeah you'll come across worse hostels than others but even a bad hostel can't be as bad as an average camp site??!!

One other thing which my parents negated to remember recently...Switzerland isn't in the Euro - they decided to fill up with fuel in Switzerland without any Francs - oops! The credit card charges were canny!!

Hope you have fun!!

Hi kitty!
I have done interrailing, and driven (from dover to dubrovnik and back) and interrailing was defo cheaper! Of course, driving has its benefits, as in you get to go wherever you would like, but it is stressful, you need good maps, and fuel/campsites do cost a fair bit. If you want to save money, do interrail.
If you really want to drive, you defo need a travelling companion or two to share the costs! I found also, that staying in hostels is a lot more fun than campsites!
Message me if you want to know anything else!
