Southern Africa - what to pack/clothing?

I've just booked myself onto the Namibia Nomad overland tour from Zambia-Cape town in November and although the pre-departure pack has arrived, I'm still clueless as to what things i need to buy to take.
I've travellled around SE asia, oz and NZ before so already have quite a bit of kit but am struggling clothing wise. Lived in skirts last time but don't think this will be appropriate so have just brought myself some linen knee length shorts and trousers but am thinking i need something a bit more hard wearing for sand boarding etc?

Can anyone help as to what kind of clothes they found useful to have and what is def not useful? It also mentions about having clothing for nightclubs but doesn't give much indication to what exactly to take?!

Also, any piece of kit that's particularly handy?

Thanks

Hi Littlemak,

There are not too many places you will offend in Southern Africa by wearing short dresses and strappy tops except if you are going into some of the more rural areas. You will however attract more unwanted/wanted attention especially on nights out.

Long sleeved shirts are always good for protecting you from sun and insects. Board shorts are excellent for ladies as they keep you a bit more covered than a bikini and dry very quickly. A fleece will keep you warm for early morning safari's and a wolly hat is always worth taking. I'd take a pair of jeans and a nicer than average top for nightclubs. Sun hat is also an escential piece of kit.

Try not to take too many clothes, anything you don't have you can pick up very cheap over there as the Rand is quite weak and is used in South Africa, Swaziland and Namibia.

Hope that helps

Hiya I did the Namibian Nomad tour this time last year and really enjoyed it.

You want to take hard wearing stuff as you'll be doing a lot of bush camping and the truck journeys can be dusty and hot. I practically lived in combats (they'll do fine for sand boarding) and vest tops. Take a couple of hoody's too as it gets cold in the desert in Namibia at night.

As for nightclubs, you'll only really get the chance in Swakopmund and Cape Town. We tended to all just wear jeans, a dressy top and some ballet pumps. dont take any heels! Its not overly dressy.

You wont get much of a chance to wash things either other than hand washing so take stuff that isn't delicate. Linen shorts and such will prob be great as the time of year your going will be much hotter than when I went. Basically the main thing is comfort as you'll spend a lot of time sitting on the truck.

Oh yeah and defo invest in a good head torch, invaluable for when your trying to cook/eat/navigate around your tent in the dark!

You do a fair bit of travelling on the truck at very early times of the day when it can get pretty cold, we used to all take our sleeping bags onboard with us and wrap up in them but one of the girls had a travel blanket which was ace - if you've got the space might want to take that too, stops your sleeping bag getting too dirty.

Like I said I've done this exact trip so drop me a line if you want anymore specific info.

Thanks for the replies- now on the look out for a decent pair of combats and board shorts!

Learnt from my last RTW how valuable a head torch can be so have already got this sorted!

Pam- i was wondering how many days you had before the safari started in Zambia? Have planned 3 full days at livingstone- does this sound like a good amount of time? Also, did you stay in a hostel in livingstone or camp with the truck? Am travelling with my bf and can't decide what to do!

Thanks for your help and sorry for all the questions!

Hey no worries, I think I had 2 or 3 full days in livingstone before the trip started, there's loads to do and ican defo recommend the lion walk it's amazing. I camped with the truck and felt this was the best way to get to know folk straight away before your on the road. Most folk were eating our at night whilst in livingstone so went for dinner with them and by the time the trip started already felt part of the crowd.

Feel free to ask away!
