Obtaining US dollars in South Africa

PostPosted: Tue Sep 8, 2009 9:26 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

Does anyone know if it is easy to obtain US dollars in South Africa? I am travelling to SA from the UK but need to pick up some US dollars after about a month for a safari trip in Botswana. I have read that is is difficult to obtain any currency in Africa so would like to get some US dollars whilst in SA if possible.
Cheers!
Sonja

I had no problems whatsoever. It was a little costly as I needed quite a lot ($1500 if I remember correctly) for my overland safari. I had to get a cash advance in a bank with my Visa credit card and then take this to a bureau de change in the centre of Cape Town to convert to US$. I think they also converted some dollar travellers cheques but they 'bought' the dollars travellers cheques in SA Rand and then 'sold' me US dollars cash paying with the rand; so I lost out in both transactions due to the conversion rate. The availability of the dollars was not a problem.

No problems whatsoever! I've been living and traveling here for over a year now, but never had any issues. You can exchange them at different places depending upon where you are - local banks FNB/ABSA/NEDBank all have exchange counters -even Amex
