Malaria Tablets - whichs ones - what price?

PostPosted: Sat Sep 12, 2009 6:17 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

I had my travel assesment last week at my GPs. Got told all the jabs i need/should have and it mounting up nice and pricey.
I'm travelling to Tanzania, Africa so as you can imagine i need the full works and then on to thailand as well.

I got told the best malaria tablets are Malarone (Prophylaxis) but being so overwhelmed already by everything i was told i forgot to ask the price but from what she was making out they aint cheap (perhaps it was the fear for my bank account that made me not ask)

So ive googled it but am getting up prices like £2.50 a tablet which is making my poor bank account cry!!

Can anyone give me any advice or guidelines of prices please?
Any one with experience what did you take?

I know there are cheaper alternatives but apparently they come with more side affects. Clearly i will have to book another appointment to cover the grey areas but if any one could give me a little advice or info or experiences i would appreciate it!!

Thanks!

Malaria tablets affect everyone differently so the only person who can give you advice on what you should take is your doctor. Discuss all the options with your GP and then make an informed choice.

Top tip - when overseas get a buddy to help remind you to take your tablets or date the packets they come in and hopefully you won't forget!

Nb - In Tanzania Malarone is not readily available so make sure you take enough for your entire trip. Doxycycline and Larium (mefloquine) can be found in major cities and some larger towns.

Good luck and have fun!

hey i bought my malaria tablets for my 4 week trip to kenya, and for 37 tablets from boots it was £104.96. bit of a joke i know! so it worked out to be like £2.83 a tablet. on the boots.com website for the same amount of tablets its about £85 but it was just easier going in there

Doxycycline is by far the cheapest (about 79p a day?) and is readily available around the world. We took a load with us but replenished in Bangkok (because you can buy it over the counter). It is cheaper because it is out of license so any body can manufacture it. It is still very widely effective but haven't checked the latest info.

Had absolutely no problems with side effect. Have met quite a few people who have had suffered with bad stomachs on Malarone, so that is by no means free from side effects (and extraordinarily expensive). As somebody said earlier, they all affect people differently (Larium can make for some pretty weird dreams!).

What we did was to get a weeks worth of Doxcy from our GP before we left to see if we had any reaction.

Tanzania is beautiful. you will love it )

I just brought 7 months worth of Doxycycline in Sainsburys for £25, that works out as 12p a pill. I've taken them many times before and never had problems, just ensure that you don't take them on an empty stomach.

I spent 2 months travelling in Tanzania this summer. I was climbing Kilimanjaro so didn't want to take Doxycycline due to the fact it can make you more sensitive to the sun and with being at high altitude and all that. Also, my doctor wouldn't prescribe Larium so I had to unfortunately pay about £180 for Malarone. Had absolutely no problems with them though - they were great!

Lots of friends I made out there who were taking Doxy, got awful scarring and rashes on their hands and couldn't sit out in the sun due to getting heat rash. I'm not saying it will happen to you but it did happen to the majority of people I went with so even though they're expensive I'd say it's not worth sacrificing having a good time just for cheaper tablets. I'd just bite the bullet and pay for Malarone - the way I saw it was I was already paying a crazy amount of money for my trip anyway.

I hope this helps and I'm sure you'll have an amazing time! It was the best 2 months of my life and I'm extremely jealous you're going!

And yeah, as someone said - you can't buy Malarone out there. I only saw Larium out there!

If you've got any other questions, feel free to message me!
