How long in the Cook Islands?

Our round the world ticket leaves 8 days for the Cooks, but I'm wondering whether his is too long. Should I leave a day or two earlier and spend more time in NZ?

I guess it depends on what you want to do. If you want to get to Aitutaki or other islands (have to fly there) then 8 days is ok. A week in Rarotonga is enough I think.

i was in rarotonga for 3 days and was bored to tears, but in the islands defence it did rain the entire time. but food is stupidly expensive. im talking $2.50nzd for a tin of beans!!!!!!! i lived off a stick of french bread, butter and tin of beans for 3 days. so if you do spend 8 days there make sure you have enough cash for food

Is it pretty easy to 'pop' over for a visit from Oz or NZ?
I was thinking I might keep an eye out for cheap flights when Im there. Is it worth it, or should I just save my dosh?

True that food is expensive. I was there for 2 weeks and I was bored the last 5 days. I did manage to get Aitutaki for cheap for 6 days and that was the highlight. One of the problems with me was I didn't rent a scooter so getting somewhere was not easy and waiting for the island bus frustrating. 5-7 days should be enough, I wouldn't spend longer if I wasn't going to the other islands.
If you haven't already booked your tickets, have you considered going to Fiji? Think Fiji has lot more to offer than the main island Rarotonga. That's just my opinion and some might not agree with it.

Thanks guys

Fiji was our first choice but it is no longer available on the ticket that was best for us, because Air NZ cancelled their LA Fiji flight.

How easy is it to change RTW flights at the last minute? Could we bring the flight forward a day or two once we are there if we find Rarotonga too boring/expensive?

I didn't have much problem moving my flight from RAR -> L.A. As far as I remember, the RAR - LA flight is every 2 to 3 days between each flight. The air N.Z office is in the airport, make sure you get the out of hours office number and usual number from the window, as it was a frustrating experience getting their numbers! I found the cheapest way to change the flight was going into the office and paying 20 NZD. You could do it over the phone by using out of hours number but they'll charge 50 NZD!

Managed to do both Fiji and Cooks in Feb-March. I thought Fiji was great! The island hopping if you want to have a lazy time. Actually it was my favourite place on the RTW trip!

I didn't like Rarotonga that much, perhaps coz I arrived from Fiji. I went to Aitutaki from Rarotonga and that was like heaven. Personally I wouldn't go to Cooks if I wasn't going to Aitutaki. Overall preferred Fiji to Cooks even though there were better beaches in Cooks (Aitutaki).

yeah fiji is alot better than the cooks.

also with the cooks if your flying to there from auckland and your booking accommodation remember that you leave auckland on say the monday but arrive in the cooks on sunday so you gain a day. that confused me and the woman at virgin atlantic who had me booked on a flight from auckland to LA after getting back from rarotonga (couldnt ge the direct flight!) the day after the flight had left!

personally i wish i hadnt had gone to the cooks, it was a huge waste of money and isnt really that special. i had alot more fun in fiji and could afford to eat and drink
