hi there
Most backpackers arriving in Raro stay at Vara's beach house for a few days. My own opinion was that its i got a bit bogged down and just stayed indoors chatting or sleeping in late rather than actually getting around Rarotonga and seeing what it has to offer, but it seems very popular and i think i paid about 10 quid a night. Its right on the beach.

As for the other islands, Aitutaki is the most popular outer island. Quite a lot who go to aitutaki are on day trips from Rarotonga but thats nowhere near enough if you have more time. Its an awesome island, with snorkelling and uninhabited islands (i don't work for the tourism board by the way!)

Return flight to Aitutaki was 35 quid in 2007. I stayed at Tom's guest House, about £8 a night, its right next to the beach and is maximum chill. There's a rugby pitch next to it where kids play after school and quite a few gather. There's enough to do to spend a week in aitutaki. Hire a scooter and go to an island night.
Atiu (another island) is very traditional and chilled out. Everyone lives in the centre so all the beaches are isolated. Mangaia is the oldest island in the pacific and also very traditional. Be aware that you probably need to take your own food to those islands
